There’s some question about unsigned free agents — Johnny Gaudreau, Sean Monahan and Jacob Trouba, for example — and whether or not they will compete without new contracts. According to a couple of sources, Gaudreau confirmed he will do so earlier this week.

Players can purchase extra insurance to cover themselves and it’s believed he did so.

Adding an extra layer to the story, word is the Calgary Flames were told Gaudreau does not wish to negotiate after his World Cup arrival, scheduled for Sept. 4, preferring to concentrate on the games. That moratorium would last for the duration of the event, which would be Oct. 1 if the final goes a full three games.

Enjoy all the speculation and crappy trade offers that are about to come your way Calgary.

Well put. Totally agree. As an Oiler fan I respect Johnny Hockey a lot. Also hope that for the greater sake of Alberta he re-signs quickly. However, this will be the time Eastern United States fans submit their lopsided proposals. Grabbing some popcorn and waiting for it to happen.

I find it strange that something couldn't have been sorted out this offseason. He's one of the Flames' primary players and should be paid accordingly.

What's with the LOL? He might not want to stay.

But where would he go? Who has the cap space available to either throw an offer sheet his way or negotiate a trade with the Flames?

Gaudreau isn't eligible for an offer sheet, he's playing in Calgary next year or some one is going to have to really overpay for him in a trade.

Ah yes, only eastern fans do that! Not like a selection of western fans do the same! Almost like there's dummies who overvalue players on their own favorite team everywhere! Weird.

This should have been done months ago

Why does it matter?

If holding out helps the Treliving get a better deal, who cares?

Are Kings fans upset with Lombardi for playing hardball with Doughty after his ELC? It most certainly got the team a better deal.

Wasn't there an article a couple of months ago about Calgary and Gaudreau speaking "the biggest contract in the history of the Flames"? Would be a ton, considering what Giordano got.

I'm very good at reading between the lines and this just SCREAMS that he wants out of Calgary. Why would you put negotiations on hold for this type of event?

Just means he will be dined beforehand ;)

Not worried about a contract getting done. Monohan and him both have little leverage, and it benefits nobody for one or both of them to sit out games.

Desharnais, Fucale and a 2nd.

Why do people think this is him wanting out of Calgary? Maybe he's just making this clear now so the two can come to an agreement earlier (Calgary's side caving to his demands).
