How the f*** does this happen after the scandals of the past year? Seriously so far from being a serious sports league it's not even funny

Oh joy. Can’t wait to see how destroyed the game is by the time his next contract is done.

The way he has aged the past couple years I thought he was sick or something. Didn't really expect to see him stay around that much longer. Thought he'd try make it through the whole Covid era and then retire. Then again the Covid era might be around for another 5 years at this rate.

this.

people really need to read up on the history of NHL commissioners.

we could have so, so, so much worse than Bettman

Your asking people to choose between diarrhea, green diarrhea, diarrhea with corn in it, or bloody diarrhea. I choose option Bettman sucks, other commissioners sucking is not a reason for Bettman to be considered a “good commissioner.”

He's been a mixed bag, I have no strong feeling about him staying on either way. But I hope the best endorsement that can be made for him isn't that "it could be worse".

He's done a good job at growing our sport during his tenure. He's a glorified spokesperson who has to a) do what the owners decide and b) is stuck negotiating with the NHLPA over most topics. The vast majority of things that happen in the league do NOT come at Gary Bettman's own decision. That being said, he is great at keeping a smile when getting booed at any NHL event.

Almost 60 million people added to US population and sports market in his tenure so far

k

Sold the Islanders to a fraud worth 60 grand. ESPN has a documentary on that joke.

I've seen it but don't know enough about the inner workings to know if this was a failure of the NHL or the work of a proper schyster

Sold out league to corporate America, ads everywhere

You either grow the game with ads or it stays the same without. You don't get both.

Priced out the average joe from most games

What specifically has HE done to raise ticket prices?

10 year Arizona ownership debacle because of ego

Yeah I am not a fan of that. I get why they want a team there for their footprint but sure.

Growing the game on the outdoor network

Do you think there was a chance that that was the best offer on the table?

Downplaying conclusions and sexual assault

We all want justice but as far as a business goes, this is 100% standard. The second you admit to anything, you open yourself up to liability. Any head of any organization that throws themselves on the mercy of the court will be fired out of a cannon.

Only major sports to have a fully canceled season on top of multiple lockouts.

And through those we have a proper CBA. There were some major changes to come out of those that were to the benefit of the game.

Fined a billion dollar organization 2 million dollars for the largest sex scandal in hockey history, half that being a charity tax write off.

Is that his decision to make unilaterally? Is he the only gear that turns in that decision?

I guess that’s good leadership lmao. (Sarcasm) Hope you work for Honda or something and get a kickback and their partnership with the NHL.

Can anyone here give an actually legitimate reason as to why this is a bad thing? People love to jump on the bandwagon to boo and disparage him, but he’s done a good job growing the sport and keeping it alive even throughout pandemic disrupted seasons.

What exactly are you looking for and expecting if not that?

its 2021. People want to cancel everyone and everything. So many hurt little feelings.

Personally im happy with this for no other reason other than that many idiots are going to cry about this.

Went from really hating Bettman to actually appreciating him. What is happening to me?

Whenever I see Bettman, I really see:

latest

I can remember as a little kid, I didn’t like hockey until I saw Gary bettman hand out the Stanley cup. That changed everything for me and made me a fan. That and the all the new advertisers Gary brought in. Wow what a sport, thanks Gary!!

^^^ this is what I think your earliest hockey memories are if you say dumb shit like “he’s grown the sport” “so good for the game”

Great the so NHL will continue to lagg behind the other Top 4 sports in North America lol Soccer is picking up more in America than Hockey

So adding that many people didn’t help Bettman grow the game?

Both

Increasing revenue is not growing the game. 5 years on the outdoor tv network did what to grow the game?

Helps owners find funds for arenas. Negotiate player salaries. Canceling games causing owners to increase costs the next playable season to recover the losses.

No, if you want to grow the game. You take a loss and go to a more available network. Revenue growth is not growing the game.

Sometimes you need to do the right thing, especially when you have the fiancés to retire comfortably. Bettman could have left on a high note and spend the rest of his life in luxury. He didn’t.

Your referring to rules and what’s enforced on ice. They had a rules committee before the lockout. You don’t need to cancel the season to improve on ice product

Yes

Who cares?

What difference does it make as a fan?

Oh no, McDavid isn't making 30m a year...

Lmao, TIL the commissioner sets ticket prices at each venue.
Legit a clueless post just channeling hatred for Bettman with no real argument

I've been watching this sport since 1995ish and the people hating on Bettman hate on shit he can't control

He has made the sport better, this isn't debatable.
