Games you are currently playing - Part 7

As I said earlier, I’ve finally started Baldur’s Gate III on PS5. I’m kicking myself for not playing this upon release, as I would have loved to have been able to discuss my progress as everyone else was playing. I’m only 20 hours in and I can’t get over how fun this game is. I could see this jumping to a very high spot on my all time list when it’s all said and done, I’m loving every minute of my play through
A top 3 game for me. The writing is incredible. Enjoy it.

Yeah I've had Wartales on my Steam wish list seemingly forever and am highly interested in it, just not sure if it will ever climb its way to the top of the backlog. Battle Brothers is another one that looks similar, albeit with lower production values. For a JRPG version, I have played Our Adventure Guild which is quite good. Cheapest of the bunch at $20 and had a demo which is why I bought it over the others. Some obvious flaws in production value, but considering its made by 1 guy that's understandable, but the game design and game play loop is solid.
I ended up getting it and playing a bit. I did the region locked mode (enemies are based on region / location instead of your squad level / size). This is the easier mode but I like the feeling of progression.

It's a little redundant, but I am really enjoying it. There is a ton to do and very little hand holding so, if you do get it, don't be afraid to google how different mechanics work. There is a story but I haven't really been paying attention, it really is just a team of mercenaries running around.

I'm still early and in the first region though so maybe the story becomes more of a focus later on. With no DLC, there are 5 IIRC. You can move back and forth between them, just each region has different enemy level / ranges and unique resources.

I've been playing this with a couple of friends lately in both a 2 and 3 player game.

Started the Paper Mario - The Thousand Year Door remake on the switch, just barely into it, but so far so good, never played any of the non mainline SM games when they first came out, so this is a brand new 20 yr old experience for me

Currently achievement hunting in Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus. I take breaks playing The Walking Dead: The Final Season (which is quite different from the other seasons).

I also started A Way Out playing casually with the gf.
Was kind of overwhelmed by how many collectibles there are in this game and saw Just Cause 3: Air, Land and Sea Expansion Pass for 6 bucks. So I went back to Medici and I'm having a blast! Plus the frame drop problem is non existant on Series X!

Tried starting a few new games and already gave up on them for a variety of reasons, all of them were an hour or less:

  • Loop Hero - I didn't think this kind of game would appeal to me but figured I'd give it a shot anyway. I was right, this style of game doesn't appeal to me.
  • Diplomacy is Not An Option - It takes a special RTS style game to really get me interested and this one actually looked unique enough. Unfortunately, it wasn't special enough.
  • Expeditions: Rome - I was really looking forward to this one but the combat is really lackluster and the story wasn't interesting enough in the first hour for me to muscle through it.
  • Partisans 1941 - I was also really looking forward to this one because it got compared a lot to Mimimi games but it's pretty weak. The stealth feels pointless and you basically move from section to section setting up your characters to perform a shootout through RNG. It didn't feel like a tactics game at all to be honest.

I did also start Sokobot which I've had my eye on for a while. It's a neat programming/automation game similar to Opus Magnum that I'm really enjoying so far.

I also finally started the original Final Fantasy 7 after 28 years. I took some time to download some mods for it and get it all going but with the mod manager, it was pretty simple and the game is already looking great relatively speaking. I didn't want to go with the remakes because I heard they don't respect your time and add tons of extra fetch quests which are boring and ruin the pacing. I'm going to go through the original version to experience what most claim to be one of the best RPGs of all time.

I started this a few months ago. I love the idea of it. It's basically a modern Stronghold on steroids. For some reason, I haven't gone back to it, though. I'm not sure what it is, maybe the cartoony graphics. If it were realistic looking, like Stronghold or Age of Empires II, maybe I'd be hooked on it. I don't know. It's a good game, but just not quite "special enough," as you put it, to hook me and make me want to play all of the way through it.

Have you heard of Kingmakers? It's more of an action game than a strategy game and it's pretty off the wall where it's basically somebody with modern day technology travels back in time to fight in medieval battles so you can have a tank or helicopter going against hordes of enemies.

Very unrealistic looking but the graphics at least look very good. Maybe that would be up your alley.

No, I hadn't heard of that. It certainly looks different. It doesn't strike me as something that would be up my alley, as it seems to be a similar mix of history and fantasy as Diplomacy Is Not an Option, and I usually prefer games to be one or the other, but I'll keep an eye out for reviews of that once it's released. Thanks.

Hopefully one of the mods you got fixed the script because the original is kinda rough (most PS1 JRPGS have poor translations imo)

If there's some rough translations so be it. I want the true experience, that's partly why I'm playing the original and not the remake. The only mods I'm going with are strictly graphic/texture upgrades and a 60fps patch.

I just recently finished it. I wasn't very good at it either. Controls were tough to get used to and since you die so easily, I usually resorted to melee weapons when possible.

Still a fun game, though.
Ended up beating it. To me it went from really hard to not hard. Used melee weapons more and started just understanding the patterns of enemies.

Fun game - just not for me.
