I think the Wings will make it in. Their PP efficiency alone is insane.
So I keep seeing this when people talk about Detroit, so I wanted to look into it their PP% compared to us and the league leader over the season so far:
Detroit: 27.7% for 3rd
Ottawa: 23.6% for 9th
League Leader: Winnipeg at 33.8%
League Average: 21.3%
For what it's worth, the gap between us and Detroit is less than the gap between 1st and 3rd.
So then I looked at the last 10 games Detroit has played, and included our last 10 as well:
Detroit: 18.5% for 21st
Ottawa: 24.3% for 12th
League Leader: Toronto, 43.8%
So then I looked at the last 5 games as well. These aren't date aligned, so positioning isn't comparative, but they reflect each teams standing at the 5 game mark:
Detroit: 27.3%
Ottawa: 30.4%
League Leader: Jets, 46.7%
So then I looked at just the last 3 games:
Detroit: 40% for 6th
Ottawa: 33.3% for 12th
League Leader: Toronto, an impressive 57.1%
Detroit has been at 36.1% since bringing in their new coach (20 gp), so it's a definite improvement, but they're no where near the top of the league.
I do expect them to falter a bit here down the stretch as teams figure out their routes and set plays under the new coaching system.
