I can see it with Gourde, he's not an empty calorie on this roster, unlike say Burakovsky and Grubauer. If he's seen as a good role model for the kids (mentoring Catton next year?) and if the return is only a 2025 2nd or so why not keep him for 4th line and vet presence duty? Some of the contending teams that could use him (e.g. Toronto) are severely depleted on prospects and picks (ofc this talk could also be a Kraken tactic to get someone to actually pony up something meaningful).

Gourde has been on the decline for some time, is 33 years old and got more and is missing more and more games.

Keeping and extending him would be another failure by this front office.

As nice of a dude as he is, he doesn't fit any kind of realistic plan of the Kraken and should go somewhere to try and take a run at another cup.

Leadership signings makes sense for teams like Chicago and/or San Jose. Teams that were committed to a rebuild. If you are a team that is "playing for the playoffs" and have the likes of Eberle, Bjorkstrand, McCann, Schwartz already on the roster, burning a spot of leadership makes no sense.

I think the whole picture itself shows the state the Kraken are currently in. We are "fighting for the playoffs" but are also thinking of re-signing players for just leadership roles.
