[whoever] was a couple of feet short of the bench when Hainsey jumped on the ice to cut off the breakaway.

Under ordinary circumstances it's fine, but you can't do that when the other team is bearing down with the puck. Hainsey should know better as a vet.

With how good the team is on the kill and how questionable Ward can be in breakaways that's a penalty I'm fine wth Hainsey taking.

I think I've seen about 5 canes (including Slavin) whiff on the puck tonight.

It's my opinion is that the ice is such a joke that's why the Canes are semi-unbeatableat home. No one else is ready for it.

Someone from the Blackhawks said the Winter Classic ice in 50 degree rain was better ice than Carolina. It's inexcusable.

How was that not a call on Slavin's chance? He deked around the guy and in response was side tackled.

I didn't see the replay. Did he trip, hold or hit him below the knees? If he did, it should have been a penalty. If he knocked him off balance from the side but didn't do any of those things, it shouldn't have been. I couldn't tell live.

So the parents are trying to figure out whether to keep Sling (they're on the last day of their trial). Based on what you guys are saying, it sounds like it's only blacked out because it's the NHL.com free game. That means home games are normally on Sling, right?

Isn`t penalty called when you affect the play somehow? Because he didn`t, Devils player didn`t lose any speed and was still going just as fast as before, and only when Carolina`s player was already on bench Hainsey did something what can affect the play IMO

It looked close to me so could have gone either way. I also thought the penalty called on the Devil against Jordan was a weak call, so it balances out.

I was upset in real time, but on the replay, I have no problem with a non call on the Slavin play.

If in the course of making a substitution, either the player entering
the game or the player retiring from the ice surface plays the puck with
his stick, skates or hands or who checks or makes any physical
contact with an opposing player while either the player entering the
game or the retiring player is actually on the ice, then the infraction of
“too many men on the ice” will be called.

This is from NHL rule book page 103.

I`m like 90% sure it wasn`t a penalty. (I need to see a replay one more time for 100%)

Getting the extra step affected the play. If he waited till the proper time to make his jump, he comes at the Devils player from an angle rather than squared up.

With the way that played out, like something out of a ref training video, Hainsey has to know the refs are looking right at him and are going to call him if he cheats.

I understand what you mean, but by the rules I posted above it`s not a penalty, because penalty is called only when "player plays the puck with
his stick, skates or hands or who checks or makes any physical
contact with an opposing player" - IMO he didn`t do any of this until change was made.

These too many men penalties are getting out of hand. Completely the fault of the guy coming off the ice, as it usually is. I can't stand how nonchalantly guys coast into the bench after a shift. Come on. Skate! That's infuriating.

In minor hockey, my team had that drilled into our heads by the coaches. You come off the ice at full speed, the same way you enter. If you're too tired to skate hard to get off the ice, your shift was too long. There's no excuses for NHL players that should be in great shape. ****ing move, and there won't be a penalty there.

That hit on Skinner looked a lot worse on replay than it did live. Watching this last shift, it's clear they are trying to drill Skinner at every opportunity.

Refs are not good tonight for sure

That's a tough one to call though. By "letter of the law" it's a penalty but they allow that sort of play dozens of times every game. Yeah, this one was more aggressive and the size difference made it worse, but it's tough.

The Devils just had a guy stretchered off on a hit just like that with no penalty, no fine, or suspension.

Nestrasil is so slow. He was never fleet of foot, but this year looks even a step slower.

I can agree about that it`s hard to call that one, but unfortunately they are not doing good job tonight on other calls/no-calls IMO.

I guess I don't see it that way. The only 2 questionable ones I've seen were the penalty on the Devils when Jordan was taken down and the too many men, and neither of them were that bad.
