Guys, how is the offence doing this year compared to last year? I have not been following the devils consistently but have noticed that a lot of the complaints in the threads here have been with the defence. Are we doing ok in the goal scoring department?

comes and goes. improving on consistency would be nice

I like that Schneider is frank in his interviews, none of the cliche pushover garbage, it's true, it was a great game on our part, but it's just one and the team we beat up on hasn't been much better than us

“It’s nice,” Schneider said. “It’s way better than the other feeling. It’s just one. We can’t sit here and say, ‘Well, we figured it out.’ We’ve got to keep at it and play like that all the time and I think we’ll have a lot of success.”

Regarding his game, you can tell he is becoming a lot more comfortable handling the puck just since his first preseason game here, he came out to get it far more than we've seen from him and it was said to be a weakness of his in vancouvah

No goalie gets a shutout then sits the next game... it just doesn't happen. Schneider will start in Columbus.

True but it's not like this was a shutout where it was all 100% Cory, he even said it himself. If I'm DeBoar, I'd rather save Cory for Vancouver and now try to get Marty's confidence up. Then I play Cory against Boston and the tougher teams.

I think every goalie in the league now is going to be at least semi competent in terms of puck handling. Schneider has looked just fine in that regards.

I don't think we are in position to be force feeding Marty in hopes of getting his confidence up.

People are all jocular following last nights game, but we prob played a better game in Ottawa, and lost 5-2.

Have to roll with Corey. And I know Pete is not looking to the media for advice, but everyone on post game, including Dano was pretty adamant about Schneider getting the next start.

Haha. Is that what our focus is on now. Playing a goalie carousel game and matching up starts based on the predicate of getting a 41 yr old's confidence up? How about getting a time machine and take him back 10 years then we might have a shot at some success.

Enough about what's good for Marty. His time is over and he's no longer an option aside from a start every now and then. He was brutal last year, has been brutal even so far this year. Up until the Flyers series during our Cup run, he wasn't any good for most of the regular season and he was responsible for a lot of the blown leads against the Panthers.

It's time for Schneider. This is his team now and he should get at least 70-75% of the starts. If Lou and Deboer keep up this swaddling of Marty, both should be tossed out of the team plane after takeoff. This is emblematic of what's wrong with this team. People living in their own delusional world (Deboer) or living in the past (Brodeur/Lou).

I have no problem with Cory starting, just saying that's what I would do. No way team could lose if they play like this in front of Marty next game, so just seems like it would be a win/win to me. We also def didn't play a better game in Ottawa, the Sens were all over us in the beginning until the boys woke up, this game was the complete 60 mins which is what we needed.

You wouldn't want a confident Cory & Marty back there? I would.

These guys are capable of being the 1-2 punch to shut the league down.

They did play a pretty decent defensive game in front of Marty in Ottawa. Aside from that backdoor play. I can't think of too many other bad gaffes. First goal against should have been an easy save, but I understand he may have been screened. Second goal against was brutal, and Schneider makes that save last night. Third goal against was a bad breakdown. Fourth goal against was one of the most harmless shots you'll see in a game.

That's not how you run a hockey team or how you win games.

Part of Marty's problem is that he's too confident, that's not his problem. He's so confident that he can't or isn't willing to realize his steep decline at this point and continues to commit a lot of seemingly simple errors or makes bad judgement on his positioning. He's actually costing the team games now in bunches when he plays. People can criticize the bad defense and we do have some liabilities back there, but when Marty plays it is excruciatingly obvious how big of an impact he is having in this area in his own right.

He needs to play significantly less and just enjoy the swan song for what it is and whatever is left of it.

I thought Marty was very good in 11-12 for the most part. Remember after the first month of the season he was on pace to finish with an 894 save percentage for the season. He brought it up to a 908 by being one of the best goalies in the league down the stretch. He was also a legitimate Conn Smythe candidate and would have likely won it if we won in 2012.

He also started out 12-13 really good, but he hasn't looked the same since he returned from injury in March of 2013. I still don't remember him looking nearly this bad down the stretch last year though.

I would rather put together a couple of wins. Then we can take care of getting both goalies their starts. Schneider has simply been a lot better so far and should get most starts for now until he either struggles or we have back to backs games.

I also want Marty to have a good season, but getting some wins is more important right now and Schneider simply gives us a better chance to win right now.

Alright, this steep decline talk is just becoming insanity at this point. It's been 4 games. Four. You can count them on one hand. Lundqvist has played about 7-8 bad games now, should he be banished to the SEL?

I'm looking at the overall picture not what's good for Marty. Having the 1-2 punch is better than having just a jab and that's it.

You can't compare how they played the last game vs this game tho. This was a team effort, not one of those they played good except for x,y,z and oh the first period. They had confidence and were hungry, last game they were more pissed off and desperate because they were behind.

Not if you have a lousy 1-2 punch vs. a good jab.

Schneider so far has earned the right to start the bulk of the games. Benching him in favor of Marty every second game won't allow Schneider to get in a rythm and might hurt his confidence sooner or later if he constantly has to sit in favor of a weaker goalie.

Marty will get plenty of chances to prove that he still got it with all the back to back games, but until he does, Schneider has to be the main guy.

No one is saying bench Cory every other game. Play Cory 2-3 games, then play Marty for 1-2 and then back again. Or play whoever is hot at the moment, but playing the other guy can be a very nice curve to throw teams off. We have 2 good goalies, we should use them.

Is there an expiration on this? Or do we continue to play Marty as if he is in his prime forever.

I don't quite regulate Marty to full time backup status just yet. But he is clearly not as good as he was 10 years ago, and we have a player that right now, is clearly playing better then Marty is right now.

So sure if Marty can get it together, he should earn more then pure backup level starts, but right now, u have to roll with Schneider.

It's not just four games...Schnieder was significantly better than Marty last year too, but nobody wanted to acknowledge it. Marty deserved the first crack at starting because of what he's meant to the team but this on-off business needs to end now.

He'll play all the back-to-backs, he'll play in Montreal and a handful of other games. I don't see why a 52-30 or 50-32 split in favor of Cory's such an issue. You can't start the second-best goalie the majority of the time to cater to HIM. Let Marty get used to a lesser role now, instead of later in the season.

We're 1-4-3 right now. We don't have the room for it. It would make more sense if Marty was 10 years younger. But a 1 2 punch for just a single season that has more a chance of completely backfiring in the worst ways possible (ie Cory leaving if it doesn't work out) doesn't make any sense. We need to roll with Cory now. So far, to me Marty has cost us 3 points this season (vs NYI and OTT). Cory on the other hand has earned us 1 (vs VAN). The other points gained or lost were more or less on the rest of the team. Luckily for us, most of the Metro division is also sucking right now. It's almost like we've given a free pass to a horrible start. Let's just take it and make the most of it.
