GDT: Game 74: Sharks @ Ducks 7:00pm NBCSCA

Sure, but let's look at his stats:
Takeways per 60 - 0
Hits per 60 - 6.55 (Funnily enough less than Kovalenko who "if he isn't scoring isn't doing anything"). Also less than Zetterlund, Cardwell, Duehr.
Minor penalties taken per 60 - 2.18 (only behind Gregor and Carlsson).

His one good stat - blocked shots.

So, we have a 6'4" 215 pound guy that skates around the ice well and that's about it. Cool.
You know Ostapchuk is 21 years old and averaging less than 10 minutes a game right? He's only been playing in the NHL this season because the pre-deadline Sens and post-deadline Sharks both have a severe lack of forward depth.

My only problem is when we have to hear how good Mario Ferraro actually is despite him being a fundamentally flawed Dman. Look at the PP goal - what is he doing? He's not trying to clear the screen. He's not tying up the player to prevent the tip or potential rebound. He just screened his own goalie.

I still don't like the Zetterlund deal. Ostapchuk is not going to be anything, so ultimately they upgraded a 4th to a 2nd for a young third line winger. I don't think that was worth it.
It wasn’t worth it. The deal was stupid then and it’s still stupid now. Sure Zetts isn’t scoring for them, but he’s a much better player than oh-chit-phuck!

Thank god I didn't use per 60 stats at all...
Pretending any of his NHL stats from this season are meaningful is idiotic. He should have been in the AHL all year although the fact two coaches have trusted him enough to even use him in a limited role is a good sign in and of itself.

Apparently he does...

But, there's no place for this discussion here. My point was never about him but Ostapchuk. I didn't even mention him.

Damn, not one but TWO hits??? Garbage Tier Grier is such a buffoon for not immediately agreeing to Claude Lemieux's $25 million contract proposal.

People losing their shit over Ostapchuk and glazing Zetterlund is just wildly tone deaf nonsense.

After Zetterlund's first 20 games with the Sharks, people around here said he was a career fourth liner and that we maybe shouldn't even qualify him. Are we seriously doing the same thing with Ostapchuk, who is three years younger and playing 10 minutes a night with Barclay Goodrow and Noah Gregor? Seriously, just let him get settled this summer and see how he looks in the fall.

How exactly does Zetterlund help a team win when he isn't scoring? Does he kill penalties? Win faceoffs? Throw big hits? Drop the gloves? Kill plays defensively at even strength?

Sens fans seem to see what they have in Zetts by that Twitter thread. He’s getting lots of praise for his effort and how he’s looked without watching his stats. Oh-chit-phuck is only noticeable when turning the puck over and when he screens his own goalie.

Sens fans also thought Erik Karlsson was good defensively.

I was a vocal critic of Zetterlund and do agree that he functioned in San Jose, never worth 5 million on a long term contract ( I know you didnt say he was), but the return of Ostapchuk. He belongs in the AHL, or ECHL.

What's funny is no one really knows what the contract demands were.

Lol what a joke. He's already proven to be a good AHL player. There will always be a place in the NHL for a big physical center who can drop the gloves even if it's as a 4C or extra forward. Zetterlund was not gonna fetch more than this if we waited until the offseason to trade him without a contract in place.

Stop creating a strawman.

Zetterlund being a better player than Ostapchuk isn't an outlandish take. If Zetterlund was traded for just a 2nd round pick, I'd be fine. Instead, SHarks added a 4th to get Ostapchuk.

Again, Ostapchuk had 52 NHL games prior to coming to the Sharks. He wasn't useful then either.
