GDT: Game 73: Predators @ Blue Jackets

The coaching staff's infatuation with ZAR and Kunin, quite frankly, is becoming absurd. No way should JVR be sitting behind BOTH of these guys.

From the article:

Van Riemsdyk has 14-16-30 in 63 games, his highest goal total in three seasons. But those numbers look more impressive when presented with context.

Among players with 14 or more goals, only Ottawa’s Adam Gaudette (10:16) and Edmonton’s Corey Perry (11:42) have drawn less ice time than van Riemsdyk (12:20). Among players with 30 or more points this season, only one — Carolina’s Eric Robinson, a former Jacket — has drawn less ice time (12:00). If you rank the Blue Jackets by goals scored per 60 minutes of playing time at five-on-five, van Riemsdyk (.94) trails only Kent Johnson (1.39), Kirill Marchenko (1.21) and Mathieu Olivier (.97).

Further, it’s the type of goals he’s scored this year — greasy, net-front, high-traffic goals — that usually rule the day when the temperature rises in the final few weeks of the season. Van Riemsdyk is one of the best heavy-traffic scorers in the NHL.

This is exactly the reason why JvR should be in. We're keeping those two guys in for what, pure penalty killing prowess? ZAR has been playing like shit for months.

They are essentially the same guy and we only need one. I understood Kunin for the very short term when we needed bodies, but even with Chinakov's uncertain situation, we are no longer in that fix.

This is my thinking as well...Kunin and ZAR are very similar and don't need both in the lineup right now. As a side note, how does Chinny ever get his game back if they don't let him play any games.

I'm going to continue giving the benefit of the doubt on Chinakhov - seems reasonable that he's not feeling good still. He/they tried and it didn't work.

JVR sitting is a real head scratcher imo. Only thing would be if he's banged up too I guess? I dunno.

The catch here is that (most) coaches by nature want to screw down at this time, so they're playing guys they don't think will "hurt" them. (I'm not saying it's right or even accurate.) So Chinny sits because he's still finding his game and could hurt us in our push for the playoffs, Dean figures.

But if we're going to win any games in the playoffs, Chinny is exactly the type of player we're going to need. And not "getting his game back" Chinny.

I had thought about that with Chinny as well...but who knows because this organization gives nothing away.

As for JVR, I read AP's piece in The Athletic today specifically about JVR and his lack of playing time down the stretch here. Doesn't sound like any nagging injuries.

My DW and I will be at the game tonight (that's Dear Wife...not Don Waddell...although suspect he will be there as well). We were in Nashville for the OT Loss earlier this season so hoping they can get this one in regulation.

Evason likes players like Kunin and ZAR, he knows how to use them. JvR can score, but Evason also wants playing without the puck, an aggressive style. Especially from bottom 6 players. JvR is not that type of player.

We'll see how next.

Understood. There is disagreement that this is the best tactic. ZAR and Kunin are not helping the Jackets win games. It's why he should insert JVR, to see if he can.

The bolded seems so damn simple.

But I just checked JVRs numbers. No goals and 2 assists in his last 11 games. No points in his last 7.

Prior to seeing this, I thought that there was no justification for not playing JVR. I'd still play him over ZAR, but the case isn't as clear cut as I thought it was.
