Absolutely NOT a fluke
Great win... but...
Deja Vu.... We will be drafting 8th again if they keep winning...
Am I harping on the draft position of the Blue Jackets??? Yep, the best draft in a decade and the CBJ decide to win when it doesn't matter.. ugh.

Aren't you a Sabres fan also? If you're so into tanking, why don't you go jeer for them?
The Jackets will be fine without a #1 overall pick. Would a higher pick help? Sure ... but do any of us want to watch this team loaf through the rest of the season and risk having that carry over to next year? I don't think so. This is a competitive group, and it should stay that way - regardless of where they wind up picking.[/QUOTE
Honestly I'd prefer to see them loaf and secure a top talent that could impact them next year. But if they are going to play some competitive hockey down the stretch I'd prefer the at least did it at home where I'm paying money to see the product. I'm too lazy to look it up but I wonder what their home record is if you took out the December homestand. A pretty solid road record this year would probably be enough if they didn't look like an echl team at nwa.

The day the Jackets start "loafing" or tanking just to get a better pick is the day I stop being a fan.
I love how "OMG we suck season's over break out the tank!" rolls off the tongue so easily but "we can't really improve our draft position no matter how badly we play" is such a difficult thing for some folks.

It's not where you pick but who you pick. In 2005 we missed out on Sid when he was a kid. We had the pick 6 so we took Gilbert Brule, the 2nd coming of Sid the kid. If we had played our way to the 11th pick maybe our scouts would have been forced to take Antz instead.
Another point is we now have the number 3 and 7 picks from that draft. Would you trade the number 3,6 and 7 picks in 2005 for the 11th pick in 2005 now?
As the wise Tim W. Aka "Kick Save" say's "the draft is a crap shoot!!!"
So relax and enjoy when you're on a plane or in a store and someone yells "Marko" and you and 50 others shout "Dano" while you wear you're "Bourque is back" T-shirt.
2000: 6th - Hartnell, 8th - Nikita AlexeevDano was a 27th overall pick.
If anyone can find anything which definitively shows that the difference between picking 6th and 8th amounts to very much historically, then it would be nice to see it posted.

2001: 6th - Mikko Koivu, 8th - Pascal Leclaire
2002: 6th - Upshall, 8th - Pierre-Marc Bouchard
2003: 6th - Milan Michalek, 8th - Braydon Coburn
2004: 6th - Al Montoya, 8th - Alexandre Picard
2005: 6th - Gilbert Brule, 8th - Devin Setoguchi
2006: 6th - Derick Brassard, 8th - Peter Mueller
2007: 6th - Sam Gagner, 8th - Zach Hamill
2008: 6th - Filatov, 8th - Mikkel Boedker
2009: 6th - OEL, 8th - Scott Glennie
2010: 6th - Brett Connolly, 8th - Alexander Burmistrov
2011: 6th - Mika Zibanejad, 8th - Sean Couturier
2012: 6th - Hampus Lindholm, 8th - Derrick Pouliot
I'd say Setoguchi and Boedker are the only 8th overall picks that are distinctly better than the 6th overall picks from their draft years. Both of those 6th overall picks were CBJ selections. Surprise!
Dano was a 27th overall pick.

A strong finish with almost a full line up-almost all of whom will be returning next season- would be of much greater benefit than a slightly higher draft pick. Call me short sighted, but I'd much rather have a more confident returning group of players than having some kid who **might** play out to be marginally better than some other kid in 5 years.
I hope that we win out and win the lottery.
Just win, Jackets.
