I honestly think that the Rangers should play a lot better this game. Better motivation, they don't have the pressure of being overwhelming favorites, and the Avs won't play an Uber defensive style because they don't have the talent to compete. Whether we win is TBD.

Still don’t get why Halak started last game.

Should have been Shesterkin against Columbus, Halak against Colorado, and Shesterkin against the Islanders.

Games intra-division games are more important than inter-conference. Who cares that Colorado won the Cup and it’s Georgiev’s return.

But sure, let’s have our backup play two divisional games. Makes no sense. And it makes even less sense that Halak started on a non-back-to-back game.
Games against playoff contenders are important. Columbus, not so much.

I am betting Shesty plays both, explained best by you. He needs to be "able to" playing b2b's when the time arises again.
GG cannot be that air headed to play Halak for no damned good reason. He gambled and lost. Now, he's gambling on Dhesty making up for those 2 pts lost vs Jackets and Sharks.

How about GEORGIE GIRL, GEORGIE GIRL? (Like the hundred year old song)
So you think Shesty should have played all 6 games and this one, and the one against the Isles, and and and.

We should at least score some goals, and that in itself would be a win.

It’s way too early to call this a measuring stick game. We’re what, 2 weeks into the season? Talk to me after the new year for measuring stick games.

October games count just as much as January. 2 points, and the East is TIGHT.

We shouldn’t just accept slow starts even though we always have them (due to bad coaching/complete absence of a structured system) , the difference last year was that Igor stole us a large number of wins and that’s why we comfortably made the playoffs instead of fighting for our lives down the stretch.

Eat my whole ass, Georgiev. I question a LOT of the decisions the Rangers make, but not this one.
Rangers absolutely made the right call. I think Georgiev has been fine for the Avs so far and could have a great season, and Drury still made the right choice and actually got some value from a goalie that we all thought would probably end up like Samsonov and not get qualified.

I mean, I'd imagine that a lot of players are privately like this. They're just not dumb enough to let it show to the media.

An old buddy of mine had a sibling in the Wild organization circa 2009, and they said the overwhelming majority of the players were not very wholesome characters, despite what their public images might lead you to believe. The phrase they used was: "they're all scumbags."

Geo thought he was heir apparent to Hank. From what we know of Nik Bobrov, maybe he was even led to believe that. Then Igor comes seemingly out of nowhere to usurp him. Not hard to see why he's salty. His ego won't allow him to admit he was beaten out by the better player.

Great post.

The one thing I would say, that the fact that a goalie has that competitive nature and gets pissed about not having an opportunity to play (even if he's objectively worse than the guy who beats him to that spot) is not wrong. A lot of the goalies want to be a #1, and they won't easily accept a new type of role in a solidified backup. And that's a good thing in general. But it wasn't a good fit for the team and the goalie, hence why it was good that they replaced Georgiev with Halak, who basically has made a career out of being a backup in the NHL.

I mean I bet that in private Kakko and Laf are super pissed about not getting a chance with proper powerplay time. It's not at the point where they would want out of here obviously, because they can still be a bigger part of the team than a backup would be. But you have to wonder if at some point that will be a point of discussion with their future contracts.
