GDT: Game 69 (snicker): Avalanche @ Habs, Saturday March 22nd, 7:00 pm | City, SNE, TVAS

  • We sincerely apologize for the extended downtime. Our hosting provider, XenForo Cloud, encountered a major issue with their backup system, which unfortunately resulted in the loss of some critical data from the past year.

    What This Means for You:

    • If you created an account after March 2024, it no longer exists. You will need to sign up again to access the forum.
    • If you registered before March 2024 but changed your email, username, or password in the past year, those changes were lost. You’ll need to update your account details manually once you're logged in.
    • Threads and posts created within the last year have been restored.
    • Our 2025 light and dark themes were lost, so we are rebuilding them. Light theme is currently available, but work in progress

Our team is working with Xenforo Cloud to recover data using backups, sitemaps, and other available resources. We know this is frustrating, and we deeply regret the impact on our community. We are taking steps with Xenforo Cloud to ensure this never happens again. This is work in progress. Thank you for your patience and support as we work through this.

I'm not suggesting Monty shouldn't be the clear #1, but you need to pick your spots too. Even with dobes on the squad for over 2 months now, monty is still only 3 starts away from being the most used goalie in the nhl... the names ahead of him are sorokin, vasilevsky. Hellebyuck, and shesterkin.
Meh.. 4th in games played, 8th in games started, but heavily skewed by the pre-xmas workload (twice he started 10 games in a row given Primeau's issues).

Since January, he's only once played more than 3 games in a row until tonight, which is a lot more rest than most #1 goalies typically see.

No issue and not surprised the team is choosing to lean on him a bit more down the stretch. Unless he falters badly, I'd bet Dobes only gets 1/2 of the back to back nights remaining and maybe one other start mixed in
He responded well to rest before, and this was an opportunity to rest him for 4 days before the schedule starts squeezing them again.
Or an opportunity to let him battle against a top opponent on home ice down the stretch... can't forget how intense competitors these guys are, and how valuable playing in games with stakes and intensity like this are to their ongoing performance development.

Either way, team is leaning on their #1 and I'm sure he appreciated the opportunity. Up to him to reward their trust.

I really don't understand why we aren't going with Dobes. He wasn't great last game against Seattle but played 2 solid games before that. Monty needs a break again, he's not a goalie you can ride with.
Monty is the #1 whether we like it or not and we are in a playoff race. We will play him in pretty much every game.

It will take more than 2 average performances for him to lose his spot.

We just have to accept that Monty is going to be overused and the Habs won't make the playoffs because the coaches don't get game management.

Same coaches that took a concensus bottom 5 roster & youngest group in the league to a playoff spot with 3 weeks to go.

I guess if they had your level of hockey understanding we'd be the president cup winners and odds on cup favorites, eh

Even if a goalie is playing 3 games in a row, that still means they are starting 75% which would put you over 60 starts. That kind of workload is not at all common in the nhl anymore. 3 goalies did that last year.

Yes, his start rate has gone down since primeau. He was tied for the most at that time, but we are seeing a certain formula for Monty and how he was able to regroup after the 4 nations. The concern is for losing him for the stretch drive mentally, which was a real concern to me during the Habs slide prior to the 4 nations. This team is not getting in if that happens.

Regarding back to backs, luongo mentioned that it usually took him a week to recover from them fully, and that was a guy who was a legitimate workhorse. Meanwhile, Monty will tie his personal games played record tonight but you have to go back to his 2nd season in the Q for the last time he played this many.

He's tired..........he has been just ok recently. He needs a game off, to reset himself. He is not going to lose his spot......
Dobes should start this gsme.........it's going to be a tough one................Monty will either win it or lose it for us.....I just hope he doesn't give up a quick one......because it usually means a couple of more right behind that one........

Go Habs Go !!

Monty in tonight. Weird decision, he looks tired.
Told you guys-
Thursday at 10:52 PM
Monty can’t play against the Avs
You know he will be back Saturday, MSL will give him a chance to redeem himself, hope I'm wrong.

I recall MSL doing this before when Monty had a real bad game but was stellar the next game, maybe Monty will do it again 🤞
Although I would have preferred Dobes as well.

MSL said himself he doesn't understand game management at the start of this season and then went to prove it when he overplayed Monty when he lost confidence in Primeau in November/early December. Monty had to be replaced during games more often than Primeau was in the 1st half. A tired Monty is a shit goalie, we already seen that a few months ago.

And now MSL is doing it again. This should have been a "planned" lost with Dobes in net to maximize Monty's rest, because their won't be any rest in April. 9 games in 16 games and a single back-to-back.

Devils in the details... context matters, not all parts of the season are the same and teams manage their rosters accordingly.

Nucks - Lankinen 9 of 10 last games
Utah - Vejmelka 12 straight games
Sens - Ulmark 12 of 13
Rangers - Shesterkin 13 of 15
Islanders - Sorokin 16 of 17
Red Wings - Mrazek starting 5th straight since being acquired
Flames - Wolf 12 of 16

Habs- Monty 11 of 15

See the similarities?
If anything, Monty is getting solid rest relative to other wild card chasing teams with a #1

That's a very small sample size to be drawing any conclusions from.

Neither the habs (current coaches) nor Monty have played meaningful March hockey chasing a playoff spot. Nothing about today's decision is surprising imo.

Right... hence why you'd expect to see Dobes in the upcoming back to backs

Indeed...both he and the team are going to find out what he can handle.
