GDT: GAME 67 | Senators @ Canadiens | Playing with the Big Boys Now Part 1 Edition | Tue Mar 18 2025, 7PM | TSN2, TSN5, RDS

Wait, it’s only 6th in the NHL?

You’re talking about it like everything we’re scoring at a historic pace for the record books.
I really don’t get what I’m saying that’s so controversial.

I think the Sens are good enough. I expect to make the playoffs. I don’t expect us to score at the pace we’re currently at forever. We also should have been scoring more in January and we were unlucky. Getting the goaltending we got at that time helped us get through that stretch relatively unscathed. That’s literally my only point.

Up by a goal with 10 min. to go, I thought we'd hang on for the W. Disappointing loss. The Habs deserve credit, they brought the full court press in the 3rd. They weren't going to be denied.

I didn't like our 4th line. They were getting victimized all night. And I didn't think Tkachuk brought as much as he normally does. Probably battling an injury.

I trust that the top 3 lines are going to be fine the rest of the way but that 4th line is just not good enough to play regular NHL shifts. Not only that but they are also used way too much for what they bring to the table. To me Gaudette and Highmore are not even close to be good enough to play regularly on a potential playoff team. You look at teams in the playoffs right now and both these guys don’t make a single roster. I think it’s time to shake things up but I doubt Green makes that call. I’d rather see Reinhardt over Highmore at this point. Unfortunately we are stuck with Gaudette since we don’t really have a center. The only option would be to have Greig in that spot.

For the playoffs we are clearly missing some depth both at forward and on defense. In a best case scenario you have Kleven with a good veteran D on the 3rd pair and another decent vet that can come in and give you quality minutes. On the forward group in a best case scenario you have another Cousins/Gregor type player as 13th forward who can come in and play some minutes for you without costing you.

I suspect we get into the playoffs this year and we get pumped in the first round. All the teams in the playoffs have 6 legit NHL defensemen and 12 legit NHL forwards. Not blaming Staios here he did a lot to improve the team but I can guarantee next year our depth will be much better.

Until Cousins is back I think I would rather see us go 11-7. Send Highmore down and keep Gaudette and Zetterlund. Give them some shifts sprinkled in there with different centers or different lines so they don’t cost us precious points in the standings. Otherwise call up someone else and give them a chance to play. I think that line would benefit from some physicality and better forecheck. It’s literally a mess everytime they’re on the ice and it’s baffling that Green keeps putting them out there at key points of the game. I would have Highmore/Gaudette playing 5 minutes a night.

Reinhardt? That’s all I got.
They've had Reinhardt up here for 17 games and didn't give him a single second of PK time. He was pretty useless all-around, actually, and I don't think they see him as an NHL talent.

Whether people like it or not, Green trusts Highmore. He's going to prefer him in limited minutes over the likes of Reinhardt, Jenik or Crookshank and that's pretty much all there is to it.

The other wrinkle is this - if you demote Highmore or Gaudette now they aren't even eligible to play in Belleville. They weren't on the AHL roster at 3PM on deadline day so that's it for them - NHL or nothing. So waiving these guys would basically be telling them to go home and that's not going to happen.

So I think the Sens are pretty much committed to seeing it through with Highmore/Gaudette/Zetterlund. It's not a good line and the coaching staff seems well aware of that fact - in crunch time the trio always gets broken up. They sprinkle Highmore in for some defensive shifts, Zetterlund gets some offensive shifts and Gaudette just sits.

Habs were more hungry for the win and they barely won it 2 en make it look worse then it is. All they hype over their team is fluke. Even if they make playoff their team is set to regress. As they have a lot of shit going for them this season. Even with the addition of Demidov and Reinbacher they still far from a lock for playoff for years to come. Even this years they have to continue the streak to really solidify their spot which is unlikely.

I think what we did this year with our roster with very little asset is more impressive. We have one of the best goaltending this year which is a huge improvement one of the best team defense in the league. Fixed depth with key acquisition like Amadio, Perron, Zetterlund,Cousins. Swap Norris for Cousins who looks already like better fit. Let's not forget that we are having one of our worst season offensively and the offense should just go up from now on.

I had the Habs broadcast and it was nauseating listening to them talk about how the refs were helping Ottawa with make up calls. Then Kenzie Lalonde was interviewing Gallagher, and he tells her Ottawa has clearly studied the Habs and copied their breakout and forecheck. 🤮

Great points. Tkachuk was a nonshow and in a game like this you want your captain to rise. They were physical and Tkachuk was the least involved.

Our 4th line needs MacEwan for games like tonight. Highmore is nice for regular season games for special teams, but we have players capable of fulfilling those roles. Gaudette isn't a factor as well.

I really liked Perron's game tonight.

Cousins-Pinto-Amadio
Zetterlund-Greig-MacEwan

is a bottom 6 I would want to deploy.

I didn't care for that game at all. We just looked like crap. Don't get me wrong. There were good parts but for the most part I didn't feel like we were on our game. Yes we could have won but we definitely would not have deserved to. I would have been fine with that also.

I didn't see the effort level from the top line and we really needed them. Probably come up big for us in the 3rd and they failed to deliver. Ully certainly had his moments, good and bad.

One of those games that we needed to win but we didn't and we can't cry about it. We just need to get ready for the next game and make sure that's a win. That's all that matters. No time to cry or analyze just to move on.

We went like 5 games (3 against Tampa and Florida) without our 2nd and 3rd centres, then 2 games without Brady. I’m a little skeptical about us rebounding quickly from this too, but it doesn’t seem that bleak.

Also we only looked “bad” against Detroit and Montreal, so I’m not sure where these signs of imminent collapse are. And we were the better team than Detroit until the last 25 minutes of that game when they realized their season was on the line.

The game against Toronto was pretty much all anyone could have asked for with Jensen out and playing in Toronto where they’re pretty good.
Game against Toronto was fantastic

I don’t think we looked that good against Boston or Philly.

Detroit had 26 shots in the second period I don’t know why you’re saying the last 25 minutes

These forwards are playing DJ smith hockey and have been for a while.

We have other long losing streak where we weren’t missing 2/3 centers

if Ullmark plays likes out and we win 4-2 with an empty netter the sentiment is probably “good road game first like didn’t do anything but found a way to win without them and now just imagine when they’re rolling too!!”

I did not see the bruins game as anything special. Swayman let in like 3 horrid ones and then we were soft all over the ice. And if not for Ullmark that game is 4-3.

Don’t act like I was positive and then tonight made me negative. I’m not fair weather. Signs of ass play have been there since the 4 nations and I have said as much
For some people, everything boils down to goaltending. They are solely responsible for the outcome of every game and what the other 18 players do on the ice is completely irrelevant. These are deeply analytic folks. LOL.

I think we were the better team through 2 periods, but it got away from us in a big way in the third. I'm not sure why the wheels fell off and we got away from our game, but it happened. That's not to say things were perfect in the first two periods, we had our sloppy moments, but they played well enough to set themselves up for a road win if they could just close things out in the third.

Had we won, I have no doubt I, and many others, would have been critical of how we played in the third. Sure, there'd be the "we found a way to win" sentiment, but just like when we beat Det, people would rightly say we need to clean things up.

The game was pretty frustrating, officiating was terrible through 2, but wasn't what caused our collapse in the third. The details weren't there, and we let them use their speed instead of clogging things up. We didn't have the physical push back we needed. Two pts we should have taken, down the toilet that is the MTL habs...

I am still baffled about that first goal and the missing goalie stick.....no icing? No player giving their own stick. WTH, were they that frazzled?
You’d think the players on the ice and on the bench would be screaming to ice the puck. It was definitely very bizarre.

I’ve said our forecheck and cycle was great.

There were aspects to the Boston game that we were really good in. But it’s our team defence that is beginning to look DJ smith-esque lately. Which is in sharp contract to how it looked before the 4 nations

Our team defence was still soft tho.

And yeah I mean goalies are probably the single most inportant position in pro sports. Outside of maybe pitcher

I would've really liked to win that one, and it sucks it was just out of reach, but the team gave us a whole string of ones I wanted to win too, so I'll let it slide this once :D
