GDT: GAME 67 | Senators @ Canadiens | Playing with the Big Boys Now Part 1 Edition | Tue Mar 18 2025, 7PM | TSN2, TSN5, RDS

We weren’t great though. We were riding some unsustainable goaltending during our stretches where we allowed like 1 goal per game and right now we are finishing in unsustainable fashion.

Once it levels out we’re a good but not great team.
That December streak was built off good goaltending and bottom six scoring, but in no way has goaltending in the 2025 calender year been unsustainable lmao. Ullmark stood on his head for a couple games like you’d exect a goalie making his money to do, and he’s head several stinkers as well. I wouldn’t even say he’s even been “very good” in 2025, just fine.

Well okay definitely not a great team there are like 4 “great Teams”.

But this team has taken a step back from where they were pre 4 nations

I never said half of what you wrote.

Both Ullmark and Merilainen provided us with goaltending we should not come to expect in December and January. We won games despite having no finishing luck at the time because our goaltending was compensating.

That was never going to last forever but now that it’s regressed to the mean we are getting crazy good shooting which will also not last forever.

Good goaltending and good finishing should leave us exactly where we are: average.

We aren't great, but literally every other WC team has more flaws than us, including the Habs. Rangers are basically Igor and nothing else. Detroit rode a red hot power play and by all advanced stats got even better goaltending than us (Raw numbers are worse because Detroit is awful defensively). CBJ was scoring at will from everywhere on the ice until recently, etc. Plus Ullmark at least shown in the past he can be an elite goalie.

This team suppressed 5 on 5 chances at an elite level. And the goalies were trash first whole quarter of the season.

Our finishing is crap and we will never drastically out score our xGF.

We are an above average team when we play as we should. I said this even when we were outside of the playoffs start of the year.

What we’ve seen lately is DJ smith hockey

Well we’re 24th in expected goals for and 28th in actual goals for, so it looks like there will be more unsustainable goal scoring coming soon! Good news!

But like 6-5-1 in our last 12

And signs of collapse
We went like 5 games (3 against Tampa and Florida) without our 2nd and 3rd centres, then 2 games without Brady. I’m a little skeptical about us rebounding quickly from this too, but it doesn’t seem that bleak.

Also we only looked “bad” against Detroit and Montreal, so I’m not sure where these signs of imminent collapse are. And we were the better team than Detroit until the last 25 minutes of that game when they realized their season was on the line.

The game against Toronto was pretty much all anyone could have asked for with Jensen out and playing in Toronto where they’re pretty good.

I said this in the Green thread but I am pretty sure they use one right handed forward and one left handed forward on the PK together on purpose if you look at the pairings all year.

I think that has sort of thrown off the PK because we replaced Norris with Cozens. Otherwise I am pretty sure Green would have slotted in Cozens for Norris and called it a day.

So if you use that logic, Stützle and Highmore are the only real options to PK with Giroux since Greig-Pinto make up the second pair. I don’t think it’s that crazy for Green to not want to utilize Timmy there and instead save him for offensive opportunities.

Kinda think this one is on Staios considering he traded Norris, Ostapchuk and Gregor all in one day, three left handed PKers. Not saying he shouldn’t have done it but Green wasn’t left with an ideal situation there.
Do we have any left handed PKer in Belleville?
Busy board for a large fanbase!
Hi to our many fans in Quebec City! :highclap:

For the entirety of March we have yet to look worse than the team we've played when tied or trailing. Only when leading have we let our foot off the gas a bit, but even then outside of Detroit and Montreal, we've played well when leading if you factor score effects.

TSN turning point was Pinto's brainfart, turning *our* odd-man rush into a penalty, while we were leading the game with 7 minutes (or whatever) left in the game.

Up by a goal with 10 min. to go, I thought we'd hang on for the W. Disappointing loss. The Habs deserve credit, they brought the full court press in the 3rd. They weren't going to be denied.

I didn't like our 4th line. They were getting victimized all night. And I didn't think Tkachuk brought as much as he normally does. Probably battling an injury.

I had the Habs broadcast and it was nauseating listening to them talk about how the refs were helping Ottawa with make up calls. Then Kenzie Lalonde was interviewing Gallagher, and he tells her Ottawa has clearly studied the Habs and copied their breakout and forecheck. 🤮
