Post-Game Talk: GAME 57 - Disaster in the Third Period - Vegas 4 BRUINS 3

I’m as frustrated as anyone but been around long enough to see ugly patches. IMO this team does not suck. It has big problems, yes, but it does not suck.

Coaching is bad and, I assume, temporary.

Special teams is horrific given personnel (see coaching).

Defensive coverage/system is horrific given personnel (see coaching).

Offense is lacking - but not non existent. Clear area for massive improvement.

Prospect pipeline is virtually nil. Must start to be addressed immediately.

So, you make smart moves (like signing Freddy for sensible figure or trade him - I’d trade him for more important needs) and DO NOT try and force the playoffs. Maybe they get in, maybe not. But ANY additions/subtractions now should be towards next year and beyond.

I don’t believe this team needs a tear down. But if pressure is put on by ownership to make last gasp to get in playoffs this year? We are well and truly f***ed now and in the future.

Smart, thoughtful moves aimed at us being better next year is the play IMO.

I am disappointed by the team this year but my concern is the future.

The Atlantic Division is the toughest in the NHL because of tradition. Detroit opened their new arena in 2017 and have yet to host a playoff game. Oddly Delaware North is rooting for the Red Wings as they control concessions and retail at Little Ceasars Arena. Montreal made a run in 2021 because of COVID-19 but otherwise, it has become irrelevant. Ottawa is a mess and Buffalo has become a black hole.

he would still be in Providence, or even Russia. Team needs to let skill players be skill players and realize it's ok to have defensive warts. You can always teach better offensive structure, but you can't teach skill and it's been an issue for a decade.
Hmmm bold part... might be a bit an hyperbol!
2019 - SC finalist.
Just outside the decade, 2013 - same.
3 President trophy in the last 10 years, with a 135 pts in 2023.

On the offensive warts, I agree, but you need alot on a team. Edmonton still did not get any SC, has one SC final appearance with multiple great offensive/gifted and talented players.

I much prefer how the Panthers are built, alot of how Bruins were built. Mixed of talent, grit and stability + a well defensive structure team.

Surely this will knock Sweeney off the fence and firmly into sell mode. I mean it's obvious isn't it?
It's been clear as day for a month now. They had a nice stretch after they canned Monty but they quickly proved again that it wasn't what this team really is. But the Bruins being sellers would be Donny admitting failure and his ego is just too big for that.

Pavel Dorofeyev is the kind of player Sweeney can't draft - a deeper, post-second round pick who turns out to be a genuine, talented middle 6 forward who's good for 25+ goals and comfortably over .500 PPG. Yes it's very hard to do but if you want to be a perennially contending team then you need to find these sorts of buried nuggets of gold occasionally to stay competitive and dodge cap crunch.

Don's done ok with the D and of course getting Sway in the 4th was huge, but the lack of home-grown forward talent really hurts.

I can't blame Sweeney and the scouting staff for not being able to step in shit better than some other teams.

They laid down the last two games and that sign of a losing team trade what you can keep that first

2 one-goal games.

We must have a different definition of laid down.

First thing get rid of sac shit.💩

Leafs happy I bet knowing we out of playoffs. 😃
Yeah, keep blaming the coaches, that will solve it all. How about we find a GM, that wants to show up every day, Why did Marchand need to go into the goalie, just unacceptable, getting more so every game with this guy , effort fine, but his penalties and dumbness, is growing tiresome.

Cassidy is walking out of TD Garden with a shit eating grin on his face and sleeping like a baby tonight.
That mean bastard.

I still cant wrap my head around McAvoy 9.5 million contract I just cant. I dont see maker fox etc. I see mediocre.
I have always liked McAvoy, and do not know how much his injuries are effecting his play, but I will say I always thought Sweeney was pretty damm quick with his signing and maybe done a little bit better in the negotiations department with him.

It’s called a Sweeney. Whenever he’s gone big in the off season on FA forwards he's swung and missed big time
Sweeney, read to many posts on this site calling for him to get Lindholm, and he figured it was safe move with the fans to sign him. He is a gutless GM, always looking for easy safe way out.

I'm glad this break is here too much stress watching this team . I'm gonna relax and watch some classic movies tonight escape from new York. Who likes that one here?
You are taking the smart approach, that many of us should follow.

Outside of Washington and Florida the east is bad. How on the hell are the bruins still in it. Its bad because the absent gm and his fat partner will try to make playoffs and trade away assets for a run at playoffs. Mistake imo

Don't think it's fair criticism when it pertains to something you think will happen.

Should really wait until management actually does trade away assets for a run at the playoffs.

I don’t get why so much anger. I want them to sell. This is a good sign for ownership and the FO to start selling. They can get a good haul at the TD. Teams will overpay. It’s just the way it is. Retool and move on. A new coach is obviously needed that will make them be more aggressive and stay on the opposing players instead of treating every defensive zone play like a PK. Laying off players is such a problem. Aggravating.

I think it’s because people are worried that they will ignore the signs and Sweeney will sacrifice the future to get into the playoffs. If he get a marginal player and keeps his FAs it’s going to anger a lot of fans. They need to retool, they need prospects. They don’t have a second or fourth in this draft. They have players to at least get them to a full prospect pick list.

We're slugging it out with Tampa and the Rangers for the last spot East is 10-11 deep. We aren't going to make it too many no shows.

What skilled forwards have they developed that he drafted since 2015?

To be fair, Sweeney did try to get replacements for the aging centers. JFK got concussed out of the game (and probably left school a little soon), Frederic was talked about as a skilled center when he was drafted, Studnicka flamed out. It's been something of a disaster on that front, but I do think he's done more than try to draft bottom 6 grinders. Poitras looks to be working out. Lysell, the book is still out on, for example.

I understand some may find my position cynical, but honestly I hope they keep losing.

In two recent podcasts, the supposition among hosts and guests was that Sweeney would move a piece or two, Frederic, etc.
Actually engage in rentals before the deadline.

"Crying, Hoping, Wishing."

That's the name of a country song.

That is the absurd, tiresome, loser mentality approach of Don Sweeney and Cam Neely.

I apologize.

I'm so sick of Don Sweeney's foolishness I can't see straight. Sick of his face, sick of his act. Sick to f*cking death.

I believe Mike from Everett had it best,

"Fire Sweeney into the sun."

Again, I understand many will not agree, but I'm glad they lost today. And in typical fashion.

I hope Charlie has decent hearing.

Because he should be hearing an earful.
There's a Buddy Holly song called, Crying, Waiting, Hoping. Recorded by the Beatles on their failed Jan 1, 1962 Deca audition and later released on their circa 1994 Live at the BBC album. It's on my play list.

If I remember right Sweeney said right after drafting Frederic he saw him as a future 3rd line Center and I wonder if their view was so high on JFK helped with their misguided judgment in the first round.

There is no shame in having a season like this after the success they have had, but they need to sell. Looking at this team contract wise and "core" wise you have

xxxxx-xxxxx-Pasta
xxxxx-Zacha-Coyle
xxxxx-Lindholm-Poitras
xxxxx-Kastelic-xxxxx

Zadorov-McAvoy
Lindholm-Carlo
Lohrei-Peeke

Swayman-Korpisalo

Move Coyle and Carlo. Sell Marchand, Geekie and Freddy. Honestly we know we will be lucky if one of those guys gets moved.

they are a 1c and THREE out of four top 2 line wingers away from contending for a title. Can't get all of that one offseason. You could argue that Zacha is not a legit top 6 C as well.

Until then, it's a hop on Swayman's back and hope to sneak in and have him still rounds and rounds
The biggest surprise to me is that they didn't have this season last year, after losing all of those players to retirement and UFA. They over performed last year, and this year is simply regression to their mean playing level.

I would try to re-sign Geekie before the deadline; otherwise, I trade him. Geekie, Zacha, and Pasta is a good line, but that's our only good line right now.

If Marchy wants to go, then trade him; I'm open to trading Freddy, Carlo, and Coyle. I like all 3 of them, but you can't be emotional.

Elias Lindholm's offensive numbers will not improve until he's playing with better players. We have cap space this summer, so maybe we can sign someone for his RW.

This is such an unlikeable team. Anytime the stupid notion that this team has any business being in the playoffs and or making a run at it creeps into your head go back and rewatch this game. It had everything, no power-play, no penalty killing, missed chances, shaky goal ending , turnovers galore , stupid penalties , lack of finish …
Now for a couple peaceful weeks not having to watch this predictable crap .
What are you trying to say? :)
