Post-Game Talk: GAME 57 - Disaster in the Third Period - Vegas 4 BRUINS 3

To be fair, Sweeney did try to get replacements for the aging centers. JFK got concussed out of the game (and probably left school a little soon), Frederic was talked about as a skilled center when he was drafted, Studnicka flamed out. It's been something of a disaster on that front, but I do think he's done more than try to draft bottom 6 grinders. Poitras looks to be working out. Lysell, the book is still out on, for example.
You look at that and wonder, why hasn’t there been a bunch of turnover in the amateur scout department. That’s Sweeney’s team. He should realize after some good old whiffs that it may be time for a change

They play scared on the PK
Most times when they are down a man (whether it's a 5 on 4 or 6 on 5) they seem to panic and often fail to get the.puck out of their zone

..it's seems more of a mental thing than a physical thing to me, but either way it's super frustrating as a fan to see them struggle so much on the PK when they were masters of it for so many years

..lack of success on special teams is killing the Bruins

The biggest surprise to me is that they didn't have this season last year, after losing all of those players to retirement and UFA. They over performed last year, and this year is simply regression to their mean playing level.

I would try to re-sign Geekie before the deadline; otherwise, I trade him. Geekie, Zacha, and Pasta is a good line, but that's our only good line right now.

If Marchy wants to go, then trade him; I'm open to trading Freddy, Carlo, and Coyle. I like all 3 of them, but you can't be emotional.

Elias Lindholm's offensive numbers will not improve until he's playing with better players. We have cap space this summer, so maybe we can sign someone for his RW.
I think Lindholm is playing alot better, of course this is just eye test and not looking at underlying numbers.

Freddy should get promoted to another team!
I would have been playing on Lw1 with Zacha and Pasta a long time ago. Geekie has obviously worked but I think Freddy would have similar results. The Freddy Poitras Geekie line was very good too IMO

Why not both? Start with the re-build of the front office and coaching staff and then a Re-tool of the line-up around Pasta, McAvoy and Swayman.

This has clearly become Sweeneys team, a GM who took over with a Bergeron, Lucic, Hamilton, Tuukka, Marchand, Krejci, Krug Chara and a Pastrnak on it, would be leaving it not nearly as rich with assets, when he took over.

The only 2 remaining pieces are the 2 leading scores Pasta and Marchand, and their clearly isn't another dangerous scoring threat among the Bruins forwards, its more than time for a change. Unfortunately the new GM wont have nearly the arsenal Sweeney had to start with, certainly an up-hill battle, but it can be done with the right hire.
It will be a Detroit level of rebuilding after the final remnants of Zet and Dak left. They had a young Larkin and that’s about it for prospects. That is after years of trading picks and bad drafts. They are STILL fighting for their first playoff spot since then. You go full rebuild with already nothing in the pipeline you are in for at least a decade of rebuilding since other than your first round pick, possibly second round, it’s years away after a draft.

Best option retool. This means out go the FAs at the deadline for picks. Truly gauge the value of Marchand. If it’s going to be too much money or he wants to test FA, he has to be traded. You can’t lose a valuable piece for nothing. What you have in cupboard now you bring up for the rest of the year, so Lysell and Merk. Why? If they prove good additions that only helps in the off season to hunt bigger quality fish.

Don’t trade your picks, don’t trade your prospects. Let the cupboard start to fill especially if you are a bubble team. The only time to full rebuild is if they end up dead last in the NHL. No retool will make them competitive at that point

Was always hoping he'd come around but wonder how much longer they play Wahlstrom. He messed up that tying goal, first getting turned on the forecheck then skating back chasing the puck and confusing the defense instead of locking on his guy. Tough to watch Vegas score that big of a goal on what briefly was a 3 on 4.

They don’t have the horses.

Simple as that.

No quick fixes here.
Deal what you can at the deadline, but we’re not talking about franchise shifting moves.

Not yet, anyway.

I continue to look at a team like Pittsburgh, and it’s scary to turn into them. I’d rather blow it up than be Pittsburgh.

But for now, you move out tertiary pieces you don’t intend to re-sign.

You’re locked into McAvoy, Pastrnak, Swayman, as well as E. Lindholm, H. Lindholm, and Zadorov.

Marchand, I could go either way on. Ultimately, if I can get a 1st for him, I do it. Thanks for everything. My favorite Bruin of this current era. (Post Cup)

I’ll continue to watch. Not expecting a run at the playoffs, but there are other reasons to watch, especially if they turn the roster over a bit and see what you’ve got with some of these other guys moving forward.

Celtics have a shot at repeating. I’m watching last night’s game on DVR. Zero interest in the Super Bowl tonight.
The trades I have saw over the yrs till now for far lesser players they better get a 1st for Marchand + if they trade him. That's another issue with Sweenious is he always pays more and gets less. Its time to replace him.

You trade Pasta and you're accepting a full rebuild and the beginning of a process that will take well over 5 years, and that's IF it works. The alternative is a quicker re-tool but are there realistic odds that it could actually succeed? If the answer to that is 'no' then that's where jumping straight into a rebuild makes sense and saves time that would otherwise most likely be lost to no purpose.

Regardless, for better or worse they won't rebuild yet. Will try and shake things up over the next 6 months and hope that works. Then we see what happens with that and go from there.

Pastrnak is a superstar in this league. I only trade him if you get a top line forward, a first line defenseman and a bluechip prospect back.. How likely is this especially in a cap league? Not likely, therefore I keep him. Without Pasta this team would be in the bottom five right now. He is the only reason they still have chance to get into the playoffs.

The Bruins' PK looked great when Carlo was in the box for 2 minutes. Coincidence?
I watched Eichel face him up on powerplay & Carlo was squared to him with stick in his left hand blade to the middle. To the right of Swayman was a right shot Vegas player with room waiting for a pass. Not 1 time did Carlo move his stick to try and throw Eichel off or force him to go elsewhere. The puck easily went low and it was in the net shortly after.Carlo is a big soft stupid teddy bear who should be moved out for sure. Its time to get meaner and smarter on that back end.If it takes a few yrs it takes a few yrs because this is not working anyhow.

yep,

It`s been a long time since I have seen a Bruins team so putrid with basic hockey fundamentals

Passing- crap
Positionally- crap
Systems- crap but this is a coaching thing
Defensive Awareness- crap
Yea it's really not very pretty .I am fine with some tough times as we retool, rebuild or whatever they call it,but it has to be done correctly & I do not trust this regime.Tough spot as a fan and long winters .

If there are whiffs, it's mainly been in trading away so many firsts, seconds and thirds. They've done at least as well as could be expected with the low-level picks they've been left with (except, of course, that 2015 draft, and even then they got Carlo). It's not so much the drafting as the trading.

Trade 88 hes going toward 30 why waste this asset too? Forget retool rebuild. Team sucks shit cant score cant defend .
You’d never get the worth. Pasta is charismatic on an off the ice and one of the most gifted offensive players in the world.

Bruins need to replace Sweeney not trade Pasta !!

Sweeney has absolutely nothing to show for this team offensively speaking in a decades worth of work. The Bruins only 2 offensively gifted players Pasta and Marchy were already here. Think about that . From what Sweeney started with to what here’s now. It’s an absolute travesty!

I don’t think so. Freddy does not give effort all the time. He skates around looks like he is doing something but achieves zero

First game of the year in-person for me, it's clear that they lack players up front that have the ability to accept passes, beat people one on one, and get the puck on net.
The Carlos, Coyles, etc. Are complimentary players and need to play with more talented teammates. The frustration for me is that they should at least see what they have in Merk and Lysell.

Zadorov is what he is and I liked his game. He was the first one to skate over to the big to compliment wahlstrom after the fight!
BTW just ran into Carlo and his family headed on vaca. At Logan, Really nice guy.

Yeah this is really the thing right here.

It's one thing to be a bad hockey team. The Flyers are what i would consider a bad team. They lack skill and depth. But when i watch them i can still seem something resembling structure, which is the least shocking thing ever given who coaches that team. They're still not good, but the thought/idea is there.

This team, on the other hand is somehow worse. They have no structure in their own end, they can't do simple tasks like make a breakout pass, they can't string more than 2 passes together on most nights. Their power play strategy is to give the other team better chances.

It's a rotting foundation that needs to be torn down. Fire the GM, fire the coach and his sponge ass assistants, ship guys not wearing the numbers 88 and 63 out (unless for some reason that latter requests it) and build a new culture. Because this current version f***ing stinks.

It was a scout I thought that said it?
I stand corrected it was a scout, but I would think Sweeney would of been pretty well aware of who he was drafting but given the results of the previous year, all bets are off.
"[Frederic] is not going to be a top-two-line guy, we know that," Bruins director of amateur scouting Keith Gretzky told reporters at the draft, according to Steve Conroy of the Boston Herald. "But he has some jam. He plays hard with the penalty minutes. We were fortunate to get him.
