A lot turned on him pretty quickly, not without faults, but he did receive more criticism than warranted.

Especially from this website.

Not only he was captain of this team, but he was one of the best scorer in the entire league over the course of his career (and would still be today without all those injuries at end).

Elite scorer that had practically no help around him, and that falls on the management group who wasn’t able to bring other key parts to help the offense.

To your point, there was a period of time of a few years where patches scored even strength at a rate as good as any goal scorer in the game at the time..... mostly with desharnais and Gallagher as linemates.
