I understand but you can sign or trade for somebody in the meantime temporarily. You can not wait on the draft for 1-3 seasons.

You aren't wrong--I do think they were constrained by the flat cap and all of that dead money/bonus money issue. For what they could afford, I just don't see how they would have helped all that much. Maybe telling Lemieux they would trade him in the summer in order to keep him around for the year? It was just a tough situation to actually do anything about this season.
