Sounds like a pretty easy concept to understand but you broke it down perfectly and Brian Burke had a somewhat similar story he was talking about today with Gord Stellick. You can't, that's the thing. Until it comes to the point where they either are going to make it or you know they almost certainly won't, there's nothing worth judging. Calling Locmelis a 'very good' pick makes no sense to me. There are no moral victories. Having promise is nice but it achieves nothing in itself. If he makes it then yeah it'll be an exceptional pick. If he doesn't, then it's just one more lower selection that didn't. Simple as that to me.
They were talking about the Russian kid in Philly and he was asked if he thought the agent would get involved. Burkie of course went on about his days as an agent and then went into his days as a GM and was telling a story about when one parent was complaining that their boy should be in the NHL because he was a 1st round pick. Burkie wouldn’t talk to parents, but just said the players as well as the parents have to realize just because your picked in the first doesn’t mean squat, you don’t get a free pass to the NHL that’s just the beginning, you still need to prove you belong, no matter where you were picked or how much promise/potential you might have.
