GDT: Game 53: Sharks vs. Penguins 7:30pm NBCSCA

Regarding Walman, how much is it a niggling injury, and how much is him reverting to the mean?

Regarding Thrun...I actually think he's looked better lately. He's been simplifying his game, which is his path to success.

You’re welcome, y’all. Asky pulled this off because I just got this in the mail
Nice!! I've been collecting cards of our young core too! I'll be sending off the Asky auto for grading soon. :D

Lots of little wins here that are important over a long season:
  • ending a 6-game losing streak
  • Beating Karlsson after naming him to the All-Century team
  • Beating Karlsson in general
  • Celebrini winning the opening draw over Crosby
  • not blowing a lead in the 3rd (almost tho!)
  • Askarov bouncing back after a bad stretch

I think it was an important win, psychologically, to be able to close out a 2-1 game.

-Askarov looked back to his old self. He’s so good, and such a fun player both on and off the ice, that I genuinely can’t wrap my head around that trade. I hope we get cheer for him for the next 10+ years.

-Smith has learned a lot and is getting better and better. I hope he gets a skating coach and really works on his strength but the fact that he’s adapting to the NHL and putting up points is a great sign. It really helps that…

-…Granlund is starting to look like his old self. I know we can find someone of his skill to play with Smith (potentially) but I really enjoy how he plays and how all the kids talk to him on the bench, etc etc. He’s a huge asset as a mentor and while I totally understand and ultimately probably agree with trading him, it’ll be a bummer to lose him. He’s been a bright spot here.

-Celebrini is such a little engine, he’s fun to watch fly around the ice. Glad he got a goal. He’s been a little quieter recently but I think the young guys likely need a break soon.

-Walman is obviously not fully recovered from his injury. I think the upcoming break will be great for everyone.

Anyway, good win. We needed that.

He's the funniest man alive, sorry!

Case and point. He’s just the best. I’ve never wanted to get a goalie jersey but now I’m like hmmmm…

I gotta say trading Blackwood is one thing, but sending Askarov back down because of Georgiev would be two rough blows to the team's psyche
It was good to see him return to form, but gotta do something about that five hole

The one thing that caught me off guard was the combo of Thrun/Thompson being all positive.
Thompson has been solid this year. I'd have happily waived Rutta and given Thompson his minutes. Don't know why he and Thrun are treated differently.

Waiver exemption basically. Thrun needs waivers to go down, Thompson doesn't.

I am not seeing the same thing with Thompson. He has higher peaks than Thrun (although Thrun had some surprising dangles last night) but he got out-muscled a lot last night and is struggling with DZ positioning and fighting for space. Still needs to beef up.

This is a good point and it's almost surely one of the big reasons Thrun has been given such a run, in addition to letting the younger, less physically mature D marinate.
