Was there a reason why or... just sort of following the NFL's lead?

It was put in the NHL CBA ( Collective Bargaining Agreement) at the NHLPA's request a few years back with a revision in 2020 (I think) for the current format.

Whatever the players just wanted to do like the NFL or they just think they needed a longer break, I don't know...but I'll go with longer break when looking at the injury lists.
