NHL is actually paused for only 4 days. There's no games between February 2-5. They've just added a bye week for all teams. They start it either the week before AS weekend, or the week after. Montreal starts the week after.

That and the players who didn't go to the Olympics really liked the Olympic Break, while the players who did go to Olympics wish they had gotten a break. Players didn't think ASB was long enough.

When they 1st brought in bye week, it was separated from the ASB, but some teams got them way too early (November), and some got it too late (March), so it stopped teams from getting into the season's flow or got them off track. NHL decided to just give everyone the same bye week at ASB, with half the league taking it prior, the rest post.
