I do think the NHL needs to adopt the NFL standard of breaking the plane to count as a score.
What does this mean?
They do have a standard. If it's across, it's a goal. If it isn't, it isn't. It's as straightforward as can be.
I don't see how this is any different other than increasing the scoring area by an inch or so. What will this accomplish, really?
Except the video technology to review blurry and grainy goal/no goal calls due to a puck completely crossing a fuzzy line is hard to tell precisely. It seems it would be clearer to see if the puck actually crosses a line IMO.
The FIFA standard works better I believe. The NFL doesn't use "breaking the plane" for touchbacks or out of bounds passes.
They could get better cameras and video system I'm sure.

I'm only talking about goals obviously so only the NFL comparable would be what I am talking about.
I am unfamiliar with FIFA rules.
I'm sure they have HD already. Right? I mean they do give the refs mini ipads to review the calls on so maybe not.
NHL uses the FIFA standard. MLS does too except during MLS Cup matches held in Columbus.
It all goes back to frickin' lasers.
