Game 50 @ misplaced Atlanta team

Pretty cool to have the hottest Goalie in the League now, and a solid D, and solid depth, and solid Team D, and... ;)

The whole last 4:30* of gm with the 2 PK's Carbs ran with:
F: Dowd/Duhaime alternating with Eller/Protas
D: Fever/Carlson > Roy/TVR > Fever/Carlson > Roy/Carlson

*minus the 3 sec shift of WillyOVStrome when Willy highsticked

Interesting that Chych is not trusted in these situations.

I think he's gonna get 8x8+ but for that price you would be hoping for an all situations guy.

Agree in principal, but hoping that Caps' coaches are simply deploying guys where they can have the greatest potential impact. JC6 is second to JC74 in average TOI. Remaining d are at least a minute/game behind Chych. I don't know what the advanced stats say about Chych's d work, but I'd rather have him spending more time on the PP than PK.

Good point. We're also paying Sandin pretty good money.

It is a very deep defence.

Chychrun isn't Carlson. He isn't on that level. He never has been.

You can make the argument that the Caps have unlocked something, but his underlying metrics are terrible. For example: WSH 2425 Chychrun With-or-Without You. Basically every player on the Caps has a higher xGF% without Chychrun. And I've already gone over his sheltered usage.

The Caps undoubtedly have more sophisticated stats than the publicly available ones. So maybe their stats say that Chychrun can absolutely reproduce his offense and that his defense (despite being sheltered) is good enough. In which case, they may re-sign Chychrun to a big number.

But if their stats resemble the publicly available ones, the Caps have to be hesitant about signing him to a long-term, big-money deal.

But JC74 also plays PP1 and he's on the PK. If JC6 were one of teams best PKers, I think he'd be out there, too. Especially at the end of the game, when the game is on the line.

It's a bit of a flawed metric, but I'll use it since I agree with your points.

TOI SH per game (Caps, defenseman only)
3:06 Fehervary
2:55 Carlson
1:45 Roy
1:40 TvR
:40 Sandin
:06 Chychrun

Simply put, the Coaches don't trust him to PK. It was the same story in Ottawa last year where he was last among PK TOI among their D with more than 10 games played.

Good thing they didn't give Ovi a big contract cause he doesn't play on the PK.
So Chych has similar generational abilities to easily overlook this deficiency like Ovechkin? Lol….

You can’t ignore the analysis. (Or shouldn’t).

I’d contend it’s tough to pay your 3rd Pair D who doesn’t play all situations and is largely sheltered, a mega contract..

People reading into it so much. Chychrun is second on the caps at 20:36 per game. Only two players over 20 min PG second behind JC74 at 23:49. So he gets a lot of minutes but rests on PP. Fine. I’d rather not have JC74 be so high on PK since he plays a lot on PP. But he is a beast and should be way respected.

We aren’t paying Chychrun for PK. 8x8 is good for everyone.

We run this normally for PKs right?
Fever/Carly > TvR/Roy > Fever/Carly

Fever/Carly are getting 2/3 of all the PKTOI, TvR/Roy are getting 1 shift, so basically Chych/Sandin are only seeing PK when 1 of the other 4 D are in the box

rather Chych be deployed as he is, happy we've got a Dman with a shot like that; his zone starts are pretty even (exc PP time ofc) so it's not like he's some sheltered liability, just better use of JC6 TOI than having him do 2:00+ PK/gm; we've got one of the strongest D corps in 25 years (this and the Nisky/Orpik era); if you're rotating only 2 pair on PK makes pretty good sense to utilize them how they are

Do tell, because previously some other poster posted stats showing he IS pretty sheltered..

just simple in general Zone Starts stats from hockey reference ES overall was like 55-45 (oz-dz)

suppose there's many diff definitions of sheltered, usually #1 factor for me is TOI so...
Yeah someone else did a deeper analysis…..trying to find it. Indicated sheltering (and his heater season) for sure….
