This is a bit harsh, no? Will Smith has taken a huge step this year. Last year he was a freshman in college, this year he's in the best league in the world with a higher PPG than, e.g., Leo Carlsson, who was taken before him and has a year of NHL experience under his belt.
It’s definitely harsh. Some just don’t have the patience to let kids develop. Smith is doing fine for his and the team’s situation. I wish they give this sort of rope to other young players to get them NHL experience.

He’s getting valuable experience and has plenty work to put in for next season. If he’s still as awful as he has been away from the puck next year, it may warrant some concern but it depends on what the team looks like.

To some on this board there is a drastic double standard.

Smith when paired with the likes of goodrow, Dellandrea, kunin. He needs to be able to carry the line and should not be given any better linemates until he can carry them.

Celebrini gets those same players and also struggles, how can it be expected for him to carry the garbage that is placed on his line the past few games.

This game was on at 1am, so couldn't watch. BUT, y'all on the west coast got a slice of what watching the sharks is like for me every game (10am start). It's a fun way to watch hockey

Man I totally forgot the game was a 10 AM start. First game I missed this season. Caught the highlights and unfortunate the 3-2 lead became 6-3 with the 2 empty netters..

This is a strawman, no one is expecting Smith to drag around those plugs; if he showed he was able to then he could play up the lineup. His ability to contribute at an NHL level at all consistently is a work in progress, Celebrini's is not. They are really in different places developmentally and should be treated and judged differently.

But thats the thing, they are judged by the same standards by you. Guess who was on the ice for both empty net goals against and both times he was defending air? Celebrini, but yet the one person back to try and stop the goal from happening is the one you locked on and criticized was smith. Why is it the less defensive responsible player smith was in the best position, while the one with the already perfect 200 foot game was way out of position to stop anything on both the goals?

You just complained there's a double standard, now you're saying there is the same standard. The bottom line is a player can be holding Celebrini back while Smith could be failing to keep up with that same player. Celebrini is a FAR better NHL player than Smith right now and there is no debate about that. I have yet to see Celebrini hold back a line, not once.

As for your interpretation of the empty net play ... that certainly is an interpretation.
