It’s definitely harsh. Some just don’t have the patience to let kids develop. Smith is doing fine for his and the team’s situation. I wish they give this sort of rope to other young players to get them NHL experience.This is a bit harsh, no? Will Smith has taken a huge step this year. Last year he was a freshman in college, this year he's in the best league in the world with a higher PPG than, e.g., Leo Carlsson, who was taken before him and has a year of NHL experience under his belt.
He’s getting valuable experience and has plenty work to put in for next season. If he’s still as awful as he has been away from the puck next year, it may warrant some concern but it depends on what the team looks like.
