Have you ever sat down to watch a Habs game hoping they would lose or celebrating when the other team scores?

While I know the better draft position we get the better but being a die hard Habs fan since 1970 there is no way my DNA would ever allow me to hope they lose or cheer that they do. Maybe I am too old school.
My Habs fandom goes back exactly as far as yours -- 1970 -- so I know of what you speak. While my head tells me this is a lost season, the team has no chance to make the playoffs, more losses = better draft pick, etc., I cannot openly root for the team to lose -- especially against hated rivals like Toronto and Boston. I still smile when a Canadiens player scores and when the game is close. The win against the Leafs last weekend was enjoyable. I just cannot turn off 50+ years of rooting for a team. If they do end up losing, though, I am not bothered as I would be if the team was actually contending.

Now, when they are wearing those god awful blue jerseys, it may be easier to pull against them -- they look more like the Finnish national team than the Habs. :sarcasm:

I've been a die hard since the 70's as well, and that was probably the last time they had true, superstar power. Of course I don't like to lose, but I also understand that the league has changed and I understand what's at stake. The chance to land a generational talent like Bedard trumps any wins here and there. What's to be gained from finishing 7th or 8th last?
Look at all the first overall talents that the Habs have missed out on (quite a few local guys too). I'd argue that it's poor management, poor planning and the refusal to accept that you need to rebuild. Every generational talent that's gone first overall has gone to teams that have absolutely planned for it. Lemieux, Crosby, Matthews, McDavid, etc. Now, Chicago, Arizona, Columbus are all following that formula.
This team is not contending with just a bunch of "good" players. That's why they haven't won since '93. I don't even remember the last time they were even considered contenders! It might be the 70's.

Same lol, I was happy when Kirby scored, but I didn't cheer. When the Bruins scored the 3rd goal, I was litterally telling my gf that we were about to go to OT, this team can't tank properly, etc., and then Bergy scored and I jumped lmfao, my gf asked me how I felt cheering for Boston. Ngl it made me think a bit, but anything for the tank baby

All hail the

You'd have to rip away every good young piece of our roster to contend with Chicago at the bottom of the standings.

Chicago is playing without a Suzuki, Caufield, Dach, Slafkovsky, Guhle, Harris, and Xhekaj. They're playing with a line-up full of trash where they jettisoned Dach and Debrincat.

I'd much rather draft Will Smith and have our core youth players in place vs. having Connor Bedard and absolutely nothing. Chicago hasn't even won Bedard.. if they don't get lucky, they've ripped away everything for a player that may not even be as good as Will Smith.

Refuse to watch when they are wearing those blasphemous powder blues. A money grab and there are some things worth more then money and our traditional uniforms are one of them.

some things a guy has to protest against.

No disrespect at all and to each their own. But do you really want to continue the same route we have gone? We have not had a real goal scorer since those 70's it seems. Times have changed and the best thing for this team is to wake up to this Era.

We have some good young pieces and it's critical we use the next few years to stock up on highest quality picks we can. And that typically means drafting top 5. I am still disappointed we are not at the bottom. I somehow pray and hope we can lose the remaining games to get a remote chance at Bedard.

I'm not looking for instant gratification with meaningless wins. I am looking at the future of this team. And that means we need guys like Bedard. We deserve players like that!! f*** we deserve a few players like that!! This is Montreal Canadiens!! Enough of this garbage of being middle of the pack.

Chicago had them, Pittsburgh, Tampa, Colorado etc. The best f***ing hockey team in the world has not had a proper superstar in over 30+ years!!! And you maybe ok with that. Well I, along with most of us on here are not!!! AHHH!!

The yellow bank logo on the traditional jersey is worse.

Powder Blue PJs are internationally ugly so fans complain about it instead.

Those 70s powerhouses had a bunch of 1st overall and top 5 picks.

Lafleur, Houle, Bouchard, Shutt among others.

But I get it. Hard to cheer against the boys. Losses are less painful at least.

I want my cake and eat it too for sure. I can't cheer against the Habs but I damn sure want Bedard. I want a Habs team that competes hard and the chips will fall where they may. I enjoyed the effort against Boston.

The Hawks are trash, and do not deserve a Bedard type of player.............I hope the hockey gods move them down to 4th after the lottery.

For me it comes down to the product on the ice. To say we didn't have a superstar is true to the extent of not having that franchise player. What was worse was having poorly constructed teams. Just having a superstar isn't enough. I miss the teams we had in the late eighties who didn't win it all. Notably the team under Pat Burns. They were vibrant and full bodied like a top of the line Bordeaux. We haven't had that same depth since. I'd wager the 93 team wasn't as deep. That is what I'm hoping for in this rebuild.
