The Flyers have a solid fanbase but they are still 4th in that market and some will argue they are 5th behind the MLS Union. Being owned by Comcast does not help them.
They made a colossal blunder when they erased Kate Smith from their history.
The issue was a song she recorded in 1931
BUT all she did was cover a song made famous by Paul Robeson and most likely was told to by her record company.
What happened was an intern for the New York Yankees stumbled across the cover and NYY stopped playing her version of God Bless America about 5 years ago. Comcast then removed the Kate Smith statue at the Flyers' arena.
I had a long talk with long-time Flyers employees tonight and they all agreed it was a bad decision by the ownership who simply followed the Yankees' lead. It was fueled in part by a popular news anchor at WPVI-TV who was known to hate hockey.
Old-time Bruins fans remember this BUT at the end 2 players greeted her and they were not Flyers
In 2013 I worked on this game and I was bawling my eyes out at the end which is not great for a camera op
I can not hate Flyers fans after that night
@MiamiScreamingEagles - Kate Smith died in 1986 at the age of 79. I just find it wrong that her legacy was trashed over a cover recorded in 1931 that was made famous by one of the leading Black singers of that generation.
I don't blame the intern from the Yankees for flagging it but their ownership should have looked at the total equation.
The Flyers made a mess of it and once Jim Gardener made a stink about it Comcast just erased her. Had Ed Snider still been alive this never would have happened.

Fenway, you are a treasure!
Hubby is sick so we won’t be able to go to the game.
