This organization desperately needs to reset, decide what they want to be, and build towards it.

Maybe it's a rebuild, maybe it's not. Hiring Torts wasn't a rebuild in the sense that we sold a bunch and had a bunch of draft pucks, but it completely changed the team's identity.

It's not about blaming Laviolette, it's just that shuffling the coaches hasn't changed the culture.

Prior to the Torts teams, the Jagr Era teams also had their own identity and were fun and effective. That core would have had some kicks at the can if they didn't get old.

I find everything after AV to be pretty featureless. There's no identity and nothing they're particularly good at. It's just a collection of players, and not enough of them are good.

The Devils are fast and tenacious. The Oilers are run and gun. The Knights are big and suffocating. What are we? Nothing.

The stink of Gorton is all over this team. He said he wanted to build something in the letter but he had nothing in mind. He took a no talent grinder in one draft and then off the board for an enigmatic skill player in another.

If Drury wants his tenure to be successful, he needs to decide what this team is and who's part of it. Picks like Othmann, Cuylle, and Sykora to add to holdovers like Edstrom and Berard all have a theme. It seems like he wants to play heavy and volume shoot. Even Perreault is good at finding spaces off the cycle.

Great, but he has to contend with the fact that none of our current core do that or have ever succeeded doing that except Kreider on the '14 and '15 teams.

It's Drury who signed the Zibanejad contract, and again, he doesn't fit any of that. What are we trying to be?
Probably could sticky this on the roster thread

I really think we need to shake up this locker room in June.

1) Trade Trouba. Hes frankly been a shit leader. Hes a weird guy socially and yes while he lays some big hits, he really is just a strange guy. I need a captain who cares more about winning than painting and his wifes career.

2) trade keandre. Total headcase and better to tradr him now when he still has value.

3) trade kreider and ask zib to waive his nmc. Mika probably would cost assets to move.

4) trade lindgren for assets and sign zadorov

5) sign whoever the biggest scumbag free agent is. We need to bring some life to this dead lockerroom. This locker room has about as much energy as a sloth.
I love all these ideas

Very well said. This organization, this team, this core is at a fork in the road. I get it Drury is probably feeling the heat from Dolan, but he needs to see the big picture and establish some form of identity and move out the players that don’t fit with that identity. The NMC’s and modified NTC’s will be hard and definitely summer moves, but start now with guys like Miller, Lindgren, etc.

Catch-22 with this team and Dolan: you don't want him too involved with this team like with the Knicks, but at the same time, you don't want an owner who is just happy with the playoffs.
The Knicks are nothing like the Rangers. They have an identity and are arguably the best team in the league right now. I agree he's overly involved, but I don't think he pulls the strings as much as we speculate and his firing of Gorton was spot on.

Operative words in this post: "It's just a collection of players." This has been the Rangers MO for as long as I can remember -- get player A, plug them into lineup, never once giving any thought as to (a) whether they will succeed and (b) giving no thought to what made said player so successful previously. (The old square peg in round hole concept.)

The problem is ownership and the fans don’t have the patience for a full rebuild. They’ll go out and sign another Panarin instead of drafting well. See also Brad Richards, although that 2011-2012 team did have an identity at least, and they had heart. Just didn’t have enough skill.

The Knicks are looking like a legit contender. They have an identity and they didn't need to blow it up to do it. Thibodeau came in and created an identity. Brunson fit the culture. Putting guys in an organizational system that works for them is what allows them to develop and exceed expectations. The Anunoby trade turned the season around even though people didn't like it because Anunoby fits the team. The Knicks know who they are.

I bring up the Knicks because it's the same owner. It's not at the feet of Dolan. It's at the feet of Drury.

Recently...now, yes.

But there have been almost 20 years of dysfunction that have Dolan's thumb-print.

I have patience. I think it's ownership doesn't want it.

Couldn't agree more. While Gorton was going in three directions at a time, Leon Rose was building a vision.

That's why Dolan still employs the latter.
