The Habs need to stay out of the box because it will catch up to them if they keep taking the amount of penalties they have throughout the season.

Out of topic but funny enough, I was looking at SH time and PP time since 2020-21, and Vegas is constantly in the top 3 of least penalized teams, whereas Ottawa is regularly #1 with the most PP time.

This is exactly what I saw the leafs were turning over all kinds of pucks when we pressured them.
Our posture right from the first shift in the second was not the same. It doesn't matter if it was lack of energy the game plan or just instinctive it isn't how this team won all those games against those top clubs.
I've been saying ever since the turn around defensively our improvement started in the neutral zone which is a reflection of a good fore check and the ability to press with 5 men who actually start defending well before our blue line. We should all know what it looks like because it's a method we've seen used successfully against us for three seasons running at the very least.

The NHL is simple that way. Teams who can execute that the most consistently turn out to be the best teams.

The NZ is where the game is decided. How you fare in the NZ dictates how you play defense and how you play offense.

It was way too early to play shutdown hockey when they got that lead. They just stopped playing the way they've been playing; Started forcing entries with low percentage fantasy plays because they didn't feel they had the energy to win races to the puck.

This fed into the leafs' breakout. Toronto was able to get their forecheck going because our fwds and Ds were disjointed.

The style the habs play is physically demanding since it's ultra aggressive on the puck carrier, it caught up to them.
Your statement here agrees with me. They have been winning because of a tight defensive structure, and last night, they didn't play that way. 3-0 is more than enough reason to tighten up no matter when it happens.

I just hate that it was to the Leafs, anyone but Toronto or Boston but oh well, moving on.

Yeah, but I was rebutting to your usage of the term shutdown hockey. Shutdown hockey to me is what you do 10 minutes into the 3rd when leading. Tight checking, conservative with the puck and 3rd man high at all times and no pinching kinda hockey.

But I know what you mean, they got away from what made them competitive lately.

Yes, I think we are basically trying to say the same thing here. They certainly could have taken away the neutral zone but as with the struggles of the past, they allowed the Leafs very easy exits out of the zone and against highly skilled players that will lead to problems. Also, if Dvorak or Anderson scores, the outcome could have been different.

He can barely get off the ice in the 2nd period long change if there isn't a stoppage.
Anderson is finding a role going forward, I don't know if Gallagher can. If by years end he is proving unreliable, then deal him to a team getting to the cap floor, or make him the new Pezzetta and put him in the press box.

Shutdown hockey basically no longer works. At least not the way Montreal and Boston did it yesterday. You can't have your players retreat in your zone and let the opponents enter it easily. You will get burnt. You can either continue to forecheck or make a wall at your blue line and force the opponents to dump and chase.

I think they all know that but it seems to be an instinctive tendency that plagues alot of teams.

We knew going into that 2nd period that the leafs were going to get powerplays and we knew that if they got the next goal that the game would take a new psychology.

Hopefully, it serves as a lesson for the next time that they might end up with a big early lead because it was kind of uncharted territory for them. I think they panicked and went out of their structure when the heat got cranked up.

I missed the 2nd and 3rd periods of the leafs game, which might have been a good thing?

I'm sure we're calling someone up for the Sunday game after that collapse instead of playing pezz 3 mins.
I woke up to watch from the 2nd period. When I saw Dvorak hit the crossbar and a Leaf score from the next chance to cut the deficit to only 2 goals.. I just sensed that its gonna be a freaking slaughter, I directly turned off the stream and went to sleep. I just watched Laine's goal a few times to get some sweet dreams.

In the morning I didnt even go for the highlights, just went straight to check the score and ye hate to say it but it was the right call. Even highlights of such score would have given me nigthmares.

We need to win tonight.............FFS I have been pi$$ed off all day long, today.
Damn Leafs!!
Reg season champs, playoffs chumps....
Same, couldnt even read anything from any threads, only the Laine-thread felt safe to visit.

We are winning tonight though. The boys will be horny for a win.

Are you trying to say Ottawa is consistently the best diving team in the league and Vegas is Bettman's favorite? Or is it just me...

Gonna be a long time before I’ll be able to stomach watching a Habs game again. We’re talking like 4 more hours of emotional recovery

Even when it was 5-3, I was still hoping for a way to convince the leafs that they were actually in game 1 of the playoffs!
