And those 9 games of giving up 4+ means that with his save % holding true, those teams are putting 40+ shots on him per night. Not always the case, as it is rare for us to give up 40+ shots, so the next most logical conclusion is that we are hanging him out to dry with some of our defensive positioning. Again, more of a defensive issue than a Smith inconsistency issue.
Earlier in the year, the team was playing with this idea that he was supposed to be this invincible goaltender who was going to continue to take the next step. The only problem with that is the defense believed that he could help them out through every step, and that is too much of a burden to put on a player, especially a goalie.
