Yeah, I think it is still unlikely for us to make it, with so many teams in front of us and near us. 7 Wins in a row and we are still only 7 pts ahead of last in the Conference. Lalonde really screwed our season.

At least we are playing like a hockey team though and not whatever we were doing with Lalonde.
I know the wings have a a harder schedule on paper than the others, but currently, after 42 GP, I would suggest they are in the thick of things and not sitting too bad, and certainly no worse than last year from a standings perspective.

The WC 1 and WC2 spots are occupied by as below, and none of the teams in front of the wings are more than 3 games over 0.500 (the wings are 2 games over 0.500). There is a lot of hockey yet to play, but of these competing teams, only the wings are playing 0.500 hockey on the road.

If the wings simply keep playing hockey and have no multi major injuries, they should at the very least be playing meaningful games come April. They need to hold at home and if they can, become the road warriors they flashed on occasion last year in the 23 road games left.

40 games left, if they can do a 6-4 pace the rest of the way, they might have a good shot at a spot (92 points). Last year at this point, although the wings were 5 games over 0.500, they were actually further out of the picture and had only played 2 more road games than this year at this point.

I agree, now that the guys are playing f----g hockey, I am looking forward to seeing the rest of the season! 14 games to the break, with some tough road trips in there, we should see what the team is by then.

How did the scoring start off?

Veleno forces a turnover in the neutral zone and gets the in the offensive zone, then the 1st line takes over and scores. You can see Raymond getting on the ice for Motte and they obviously lost Raymond and we score.

Veleno has been our best forward along with big guns.

Tarasenko finally 2 assists. We need tarasenko, Rasmussen and Berggren to get going.

We also see that Gustafsson also started producing.

Our schedule is tough, so the next game vs the sharks is a must win.

RED WINGS CONTINUE TO ROLL UNDER McLELLAN
Patrick Kane
(1-1—2) and Alex DeBrincat (1-0—1) scored two of Detroit’s four goals in the opening 7:53 as the Red Wings (20-18-4, 44 points) captured their seventh straight win – two contests shy of the longest streak in franchise history – and improved to 7-1-0 since Todd McLellan took over as head coach on Dec. 27. The Red Wings, who were the highest-scoring team Sunday, are averaging 4.13 goals per game under their new head coach, which is second to only the Blues (4.25 G/GP) through that span.

* The Red Wings have scored 14 power-play goals under McLellan – boosted by three Sunday which is tied for their most in a game this season (also Nov. 15). Those 14 tallies on the man advantage are the most by all teams over that span and five more than the next closest (CBJ: 9). Overall, the Red Wings extended their streak of consecutive games with a power-play goal to eight contests – the club’s longest such stretch since 2015-16 (8 GP from March 19 – April 2, 2016). McLellan is now the second head coach in franchise history to win seven of his first eight games with the franchise (also Mike Babcock: 7-1-0 in 2005-06).

* Kane extended his point streak to seven games, which is tied for the longest by a Red Wings player age 36 or older in the past decade. The other two came from Henrik Zetterberg (7 GP in 2016-17) and Pavel Datsyuk (7 GP in 2015-16).

My theory is Larkin had some say in those guys. And to keep cap happy, Steve obliged.
Maybe, but I think Yzerman should stop listening to Larkin, McCarty, larionov, fans ....
This is a 3rd overall kid and Yzerman could have had him for free and cheaper than Copp and Compher. Kakko the same. I don't see how would it hurt.

Some posters here complained about tanguy and wanted him gone, while obviously it was Lalonde and the PK coach.

I was thinking of Dylan Strome. He is young and on pace for 87 points this season, signed for less than both Copp and Compher. Why did Yzerman pass on him and why on Kakko?

Why do you assume just because a player signed somewhere other than Detroit, that means Yzerman passed on them?

The trick with free agents is they get to choose where they want to go.

Because Strome signed a 1 yr $3.5M contract with the caps? That wouldn't have been too hard to beat considering Stevie gave Copp 5x$5.6M instead.

Maybe nobody beat the Caps' offer since GMs don't have crystal balls? Prime example of hindsight being 20/20. Strome did not have the value at the time that he does today.

It is not about the crystal ball. Strome, Kakko, Trouba...
Signing Strome instead of Copp or Compher is a no brainer.
I am not familiar with all the similar moves, but Yzerman should definitely tried to take a chance on some of those players, instead of signing veterans and giving then ntc.
