GDT: Game 42: Red Wings vs kraken 3:00 pm et 1/12/25

f*** yes. I’ve missed this.

Even last year during the hot streak they didn’t look anywhere near this good.

Man either we really were underperforming and are cup contenders or Todd is a genius and making the most of this roster.

LA must’ve have horrible character last year for him to be fired. This makes no sense.

I’m at work and saw the score 4-0 and I audibly went “WTF?!”

This is a serious question. Where does the new coach bump come from? Is it a fear that anyone can be replaced or hype around a new face promising improvement? Obviously it varies, but what’s the general thought behind it?

I straight up think Derek LoLonde was absolutely shit and this is what the team was supposed to be playing like.

I have no idea otherwise.

So glad we got ourselves a coach who's been around a bit rather than a first time coach. Todd knows how to motivate players and run a locker room more than Blash or Lalonde. I would consider Blashill a better hc than Lalonde as well.

Just to speculate but it seems Kane was the biggest anti-Lalonde force. The guys always seem to downplay the new strategies (honestly I can’t even pin point it either they just seem so much faster) Except Kane it’s actually pretty funny listening to all his interviews post game. Also Berger made some comments seemed like a little shade

I’ve shit talked Kane endlessly the last couple years and I’ll be the first to say he’s been a huge factor for this run. If Lalondes “style” was the actual issue holding him back and his comments on his hip feeling better than it has in years etc are true, then that’s a 80-90pt winger there - that’s huge.

It's weird because season one for Lalonde the Wings looked off and we all just went with it being a new coach and players learning the system. I know we all had some fun last season but they still had those bad structural signs which came to a head in that March.

I think the system was just garbage (Priority).

LaLonde was forcing them into a chip & chase, low-possession system. That can work when you have a solid defense to choke the opponent's forecheck. Detroit's D isn't good enough for that so they failed and flailed and broke as a team.

McLellan has "let them off the chain" to play a more traditional possession-based game, IMO. They ARE good enough to succeed with this system. Add to that the knowledge that they are ALL playing for their jobs now, and we're getting what we see.

Dunno how things look for the second half of the season, but they seem to be headed upward.

When I saw the score was 4-0 I had to do a double take because my first reaction was 4-0 Kraken.

How has Kasper looked? What about Burgers, Ras and Ed?

New ideas and new messaging are exciting and refreshing. That makes everyone try harder. Plus for a little bit you have the lessons of your old coach still baked in while learning from the new guy, leading to a bit of "the best of both worlds." Eventually the flaws of the new guy start to show and the messaging gets old.

Think about dating. At first maybe you don't care about this annoying habit your date has. At least they don't do that thing your ex used to do and they're way better at A and B. After a few months you don't care about A and B anymore, only C and D which they suck at. Plus they do this super annoying thing that even your awful ex would never have done.

Remember Lalonde complained about Kucherov?
I don’t think that guy liked coaching up talented players.

Edvinsson has been fantastic, had a great set up early and was involved on the 1st goal.
Everyone looks good so far.

this doesn't really seem like your typical coach bump. They are a completely different team now

I think because they're running a significantly different system. They're actually making passes on zone exits. It seems like Lalonde was trying to fix the goals against issue and had them running a system that didn't play to their strengths. Then that starts the downward spiral of frustrated players, losing streaks, not playing as a team.
