I think 9 out 10 people living in New York City would say "who the f*** is that?" if you showed them a picture of Kreider.
Higher than that.

NYC is very easy to live in for a tall white guy.

That said, MSG is much, much, much more likely to boo the home team than almost any other arena in the league. That could bother you.

The Rangers, any way you slice it, are icing one of the most disappointing 1st overall picks in modern NHL history. Where's all this media you guys are telling me about? I haven't heard Lafreniere's name mentioned by anybody but Sam Rosen.

Within the bubble of hockey media, yes. New York is a big deal. The New York scene is a big deal within everything.

But like, just reading the Post or turning on the news? Where is it?

If that happened to Knicks, it would be bigger news than the presidential election.

Because of the sheer magnitude of the other teams playing here (the Yankees, Mets, Knicks, and Giants are four of the biggest teams in professional sports), I would argue that New York is up there with easiest markets to play hockey in.

The Rangers get virtually no coverage outside of their own tv station and their own beat. Every team has that.

Yeah, Larry talks about the team. Show me one clip of Francesca's show, or Kay's show, or Tierney's show grilling the Rangers. Maybe Boomer now and then because he's a fan. That's about it.

Boomer talks about the Rangers literally every day. To an annoying extent. I listen to WFAN more than I care to admit and they mention the Rangers plenty. The sport is just not as popular as the other big 4. The Rangers have a very passionate and very online fanbase, which is why you and I are talking right now. The players also definitely see whats being said about them on the internet, more than they would on WFAN or NY Post+, which we can safely assume they don't listen to.

The difference between NY and places like Florida, Tampa, dallas, etc. is that when those places are winning, its the greatest thing in town. But when they are losing, literally no one cares. When the rangers are winning and playing well its an expectation. When they are losing, everyone across the media landscape in NY and nationally has the knives out. As far as your point about Lafreniere, there isnt a sport where a 23 year old homegrown guy coming off a great playoff run gets targeted by fans and media as the culprit for a disappointing season. that's usually reserved for the aging (Kreider) and overpaid (Mika) and underperforming (Panarin/Igor) vets. And they've gotten plenty of criticism. We literally just went through a month of heat. The players noticed it.

If the Knicks got Wembanyama and he was a 13 and 10 guy in year 5, this city wouldn't survive.

Put Lafreniere on Toronto or Vancouver and give him the same career so far, and it's the same result -- the city would be burned down.

This is not a hard place to be a hockey player. It's downright easy compared to Canada. You're gaslighting yourself into thinking the Rangers are important.

If I watched EPSN, listened to the radio, or read the news 24/7, and only ate when the Rangers were a topic of discussion not from somebody affiliated with the Rangers or hockey, I would starve to death before the month was over.

It's both now but I don't think people are more upset now unless they're f***ing casuals.

Most people were tired of this team's bullshit years ago.

This board was crucifying the team in 2022 during the playoff run.
That’s true, but that was mostly us autists on this board and maybe a few on Reddit .

But his season even the casuals and the media are totally disgusted and done with this core.

To be fair, Larry Brooks is where most of the coverage comes from and I don't think a single second has passed since he's been employed at the post where he didn't hate the Rangers.

Call me crazy but I feel like we win this game for no other reason than it's the Rangers and they tend to do the opposite.

It's hard to believe that msg doesn't have seating for like 40,000 really, i know the building being what it is would make it hard but I think the Rangers would be more popular if more people could get in.

So can anyone tell me where Brooks learned so much about hockey? Like how does he feel he's some sort of expert? I can't imagine the guy ever even put a pair of skates on.

In his prime, Larry was really good at being sarcastic and pointing out the flaws in dysfunctional teams in a funny way. He covered the Devils during their Mickey Mouse years and then the Rangers went into the Dark Ages not long after he got on their beat. Covering bad teams fed into his shtick nicely.

As he's aged, he's become more old man yelling at cloud. He pushes his agenda regardless of the results. I don't think he has much besides "lol Devils" or "lol Rangers" but that was suitable for the environment for a long time.

When the Rangers went on what most consumers would consider a pretty good run, he just became annoying.

He also started covering hockey in an era where there were three fights a game and he never evolved past that.
