Game #4 : Kings vs. Senators - 10/9/13 - Overtime Win!

Meanwhile, is anyone else kind of annoyed with some of the post-game questions media are giving the Kings?

The questions to Sutter last night...they were acting as if we lost or didn't deserve the W. Love how Sutter handled it but jeez, between the questions to Quick the other night and the questions to Sutter last night...

I'm thinking basically every pre-game, in-game, and post-game question directed toward any player or coach on any team is almost pointless. Which is why you get pretty much the same basic answers to every one of them.

I want to see...

BROWN – KOPITAR – WILLIAMS
CARCILLO – RICHARDS – CARTER
FRATTIN – STOLL – TOFFOLI
CLIFFORD – LEWIS – KING/NOLAN

We need to get our 3rd line to start contributing some offense.

I thought Carcillo's game last night was fine. He agitated without taking any dumb penalties, but he is as Sutter has said a 4th line player.

Unlike many other folks I like King and Nolan on the same line. The two seem to have some chemistry and when they get the puck deep, they pound the other team's defense in a way some don't notice.

At this point Fraser can remain a healthy scratch. I am not going to be surprised if Dean is looking to make a move using Stoll, but I think he will give it 20 games or so before doing anything too drastic.

I agree with pretty much all you have said with the exception of trading Stoll. I think the depth he brings once playoff time is very valuable, and although I think Lewis has had a great start to the season, I am not ready to hand over the third line to him fully until he shows the consistency that Stoll has over the last few years.
Having Stoll in DS's pocket probably helps push Lewis.

I liked Carcillo's game last night. I thought he played with and edge but did not cross it. His penalty was BS, but he took two Sens with him, so I cannot be made.
The stupid Sportsnet broadcasters were questioning Neil going to the box. They were saying what is he getting a penalty for, water cannot hurt the ice. What idiots, there is not better example of unsportsmanlike.

They're not stupid at all.

They were actually questioning Carcillo's penalty too.

They basically said that the refs found a way to get Carcillo off the ice while still giving LA a powerplay by giving Neil one as well. They thought both calls were pretty weak.

In their minds, there should have only been one penalty, but the refs were trying to settle things down.

Martinez is a little more responsible on the D end but not as good as Muzz with his puck movement. And he is still way more mobile than Regehr, has Marty ever been given a shot to play with Doughty? Just throwing that out there, what do you guys think?

Doughty already came out and pretty much said that he wants someone more mobile to play with, and if Martinez is paired with Doughty he would be able to focus more on the D zone and have to provide less offense for his pair.

FYI, you might see things on the opposing team's board that you don't like.

I was thinking about A-Mart/Doughty together as well, but I'd wonder how he'd handle those minutes/tougher assignments. He definitely needs someone more mobile that he doesn't have to babysit

I'm pretty sure Kurrilino hexed Stoll with hf voodoo

I can guarantee i didn't

I am maybe the only one who is really thinking hockey instead watching.
I don't give a damn what players did before they joined the Kings.
All i see is a guy who has absolutely zero hockey sense, mediocre speed
and his shooting is uhmmm.... jeahh.... unaccurate to be polite.
But his biggest strength is that he sucks out every drop of offense of his linemates because how he plays.

The next thing is not his fault because the coach keeps on fielding him.
He blocks the 3rd line center position from someone who actually can play center.
This is why all people always cry we don't have secondary scoring.
He blocks veteran winger like Williams going down to 3rd line and
form a rough young gem into a fine player.

Just as example he blocks Williams from making way for Toffoli.
Let's assume we would have kept Loktionov over Stoll.
We would end up with

Brown - Kopitar - Toffoli
Brunner - Richards - Carter
Frattin - Loktionov - Williams
Clifford - Lewis - Nolan

Again it's not his fault but he blcoks the developement of Toffoli and Pearse plus eats up more salary then a youngster like Loktionov.
Not to mention we could have had Brunner for free.

All this makes me think Stoll should play somewhere else.
I would prefer the Oilers with Terry Murray as coach.
That keeps them away from success for a couple of years until they figure out.

And please.........get some spirit into the teams. The whole
"doesn't matter we lost there is so much more hockey to play" makes me puke

Should we be worried that Frattin is a -5 already? I mean, Muzzin is a -5, too, but that was not unexpected. ;)

With Stoll's salary and ineffectiveness outside of the faceoff dot, and considering our cap situation, I don't see how Stoll isn't moved at some point. Even if it's just for a low pick or something, the salary cleared is valuable. This team has three top six centerman capable of taking crucial draws. It's high time they all stopped relying on Stoll, anyway.

In an ideal world, we move both Stoll and Regehr for a defenseman, but I'm not sure what the market is out there. There are a couple 2014 UFAs out there that may fit, like Pitkanen, Meszaros, Quincey (lol), Girardi. I think ti was Tonelli who said maybe Giordano was available? But I doubt that happens with Calgary currently trolling the league.

Pretty slim pickens, unless we put together a real package for a top four guy under contract. But that'll likely cost Toffoli and more.

Haven't been able to catch any Kings games this year how's Matt Frattin looking?

Invisible, but the lines he's on have been doing well despite that. That's all you can ask from him with his skillset, even though it seems like he should be hitting more.

What the Kings really need are some defensemen exactly like him - invisible, not making terrible mistakes.

Frattin is not a problem. The problem is the bottom six and the D. Muzzin is a worse version of Jack Johnson, Voynov has never been worse, and Lombardi thought having three third-pair quality stay at home defensemen was a good idea.

It's also not good that you can say almost the exact same thing about Kopitar that you can about Frattin - he's been invisible. What the NYR fan said in the home opener game day thread is true, though. NYR, like many other teams, has some excellent shutdown defensemen. They shut down Kopitar's line, and then the Kings lost because the Stoll line can't score or be any kind of offensive threat when the Rangers' best D was focused on stopping the other lines.

The solution is to trade away extra bottom six players, trade for a defenseman, and call up home-grown wingers to score and play on the third and fourth lines. Maybe trade for Jonathan Blum? Or maybe after Klesla recovers, an overpayment could get a good Dman from rival Phoenix.

But yeah, the sky is still falling since the Kings have been dominated 5v5 so far this season.

He also doesn't hesitate to shoot, unlike Muzzin. That's what Muzzin's biggest problem is.

Nailed it.

He has a fearsome shot. If Muzz shot as much as he should with the rocket he's got, opposing defenses would have to change how they play and/or we score more.

You say we need to get our 3rd line contributing offense but then you include a guy who hasn't scored a goal in almost half a seasons worth of games centering that line?

I think we kinda took Scuderi for granted. Jeez. Crazy how smooth we looked when we had him vs how bad our D looks so far. Hopefully it gets better
He was so important at breaking up opposing plays through the neutral zone. It's not a skill that's going to show up on the stat sheet much, but he was a big part of our ability to control the center of the ice.

They could always buy him out at the end of the year if he's not injured.

What's unfortunate about Regher's contract is that it is clear evidence that Sutter and Lombardi liked him enough to sign him for the next several years. That means that even though he was (to many of us) obviously not an effective option as a big-minute player, they liked what they saw last year--and therefore we can expect to see Regher play just about every minute of that contract.

They wanted him, and they got him. We're stuck with him.

I think we will have a guy ready to step in from Manchester if we need it. At this point, i'd say Martinez has been more consistent than Muzzin. Muzzin has a lot of upside, but he makes some boneheaded plays also. The Greene/Martinez pairing just seems to work. I'm not big on Doughty/Regehr. I would almost like to see a guy like Andrew Campbell play with Doughty. I think they have him paired with Forbort at Manchester, and they are doing very well so far.

Andrew Campbell with Drew Doughty? There's a reason Campbell hasn't made the NHL for even one game after five full seasons in Manchester and has cleared waivers each of the past two (or maybe three) seasons. And you want him with Drew Doughty?

I liked Carcillo's game last night. I thought he played with and edge but did not cross it. His penalty was BS, but he took two Sens with him, so I cannot be made.

I love how sportsnet blacked out the game in Manitoba. the game was in LA, and it was blacked out here. Sportsnet is as dumb as Moriarty.

Maybe Frattin's a -5 because of Muzzin? :dunno:

Marc Crawford convinced DL to sign Dan Cloutier to an extension. Regehr is Darryl Sutter's Cloutier.
