Islands in the stream.
Back to the game it seems a bit surreal, and like another universe, one year ago when we still had Chiarelli ruining things, team was over in Europe, Barely beat the Cologne Sharks DEL and then got spanked by the NJD in Stockholm. The Devils schooled us from the start, ran counters, exposed us, and made the team look silly.

I really think it set all of last season off for us. Really the start of the season is what got McLellan fired. he took the team as far as he could.

Year later its the Devils having the start from Hell and the Oilers starting the season on a mega roll and with much improved coaching and management and more useful roster depth.

1yr, so different.

Except its cold outside, that much is the same. A year ago we had the nuclear winter of smoke so thick you could hardly see in the month of August and then Snow throughout a lot of September. Least we had a better August and Fall this year. I only mention that because things were pretty bleak a year ago and that was part of the Edmonton zeitgeist of the time. Buckling into another winter when it seemed like we didn't even have a summer...

Don't miss the games early start time folks.

They'll be a special announcement pregame where Taylor Hall asks to be traded back here for Adam, cough, I mean Lars Larsson. But James Hetfield has a meltdown and sues Napster.

Anyway, get up early to go to work peeps. -10 outside and your windows are definitely needing a scrape. Time to find the scraper and winter stuff..

I love my classic rock especially 80's rock and metal...this GDT had me in stitches. So much awesomeness...I really hope the players actually see these somewhere along the way.

Axl McRose :laugh::laugh::laugh:

This board truly has some of the most creative minds I've ever seen. Between the GDTs @488fitter @ConnorMcMullet and @ToeMcDrag83 have unleashed on us so far this season along with the gifs @Del Preston and @The Batman provide us with...I think I can safely speak for the rest of us by saying Thank You for all the work you guys do to provide us with laughs and entertainment. I know other posters have created some awesome GDTs in the past who I am forgetting but please know you are included in this thank you as well.

Please keep up the outstanding work...Oilers game days are beginning to be fun again.

Holy shit, I’m dying laughing right now. I didn’t think anyone could top the WWE thread from a few years ago, but this is true brilliance.

Don't mean to rub it in but Im going golfing today and we have a ball tourney this weekend. Forecast next week is 16 - 22 for 4 days in a row.
Very happy with Oilers start. This is a different team for sure. Thank you Ken Holland. Its all about Team Speed now and he addressed that as best as he could. The 4th line looked great the other night. I was very impressed with the cycling down low. Everyone must play hard because others are waiting to take your spot
Oilers 3-0, Packers are 4-1. Life is good!

Devils are either gonna be incompetent or desperate. We better neutralize them and dishearten them quick. Hall is gonna shoot the lights out. Big game.

Had a good laugh at the GTD. Great job! Top line of G'n'R, one of my fav bands of all time. Just telling my son this morning that they promised new music coming soon and have started touring again and I can't wait to go watch them again when they come.

Back to hockey. I watched most of the NJD-Flyers game yesterday. Wow do the devils look bad. Schneider actually kept them in the game up until the Flyers broke it open in the 3rd. Carter Hart with his first career shutout. NJD with 2x 5 on 3s in the game and the second 5 on 3 for a full 2 minutes. Hart completely robbed Hall on a one timer (check the highlights for that one) and NJD pretty much went south from there. You would think they would have a better bounce back game tonight, but i just don't think so. NJD look unmotivated and slow. If we come in with purpose tonight, this will be a high scoring affair. And hopefully no gifts from Smith.

5-1 Oilers. Nuge finally gets on the scoresheet.

Ever.
@488fitter, thank you. A lot (a lot) of effort and it is very, very appreciated. I can't stop smiling over my coffee. If you ever wonder if you make a difference with these extra-curricular activities, there are many who truly are thankful for your work.

Game day: So happy that it seems the team has finally (we will see for how long) bought into an actual game-plan. Tipp's system is very similar to Hitch's, with down low support from the forwards so it's quick passing out of the zone. It seems the team followed that for only a portion of the time last year, and this year's edition seems to buy in.

I also think Sheehan will become a big, big presence for us this year; just as another reliable option to put on the ice to relieve some pressure defensively so it won't always be up to Nuge to try and do both offence while maintaining defensive matchups, (which should lead to some easier offence).

Also praying this is not just a 10 game spurt from Jurcho who then disappears. Would be so nice to have a potent second line.

Again, thanks for the efforts @488fitter.

The Manning Jim Morrison one was almost too disturbing to comment on. Although it fits in the "People are strange" sense and Manning certainly is that.

What I liked about the OP is its evident some matching thought went into the diff players and who they would match up with.
Swede Zeppelin was just ridiculously good and with Klefbom being kind of some one like Robert Plant. Both guys that like preening in front of the mirror a bit too much, heh, jmo.

If I could photoshop I would urge a few more. I would like to see Dave Tipppett as Lead Guitar player Buck Dharma from BOC. Something about the Stache. Dave used to rock the Stache.

Dave Tippett in a rock band rocking the mighty moustache. I dunno, I think it would be fun. Heres a suitable BOC picture;

Heres a suitable Tippet picture;

dave-tippett-1994-53.jpg

I mean look at that picture, he just wants to be in a 70's 80's rock band.

Also, would be fin to see Ken Holland as classic Black Sabbath drummer Bill Ward rocking the drum kit.

Bill Ward;

Ken Holland with flying high rock face on;

even funnier if the photoshops are bad B/W color juxtaposition. I'm not asking much here but these guys rock on, and are a big part of our success so far so lets get them on stage..

Also, Chiarelli as sad fat Godzilla. Shouldn't be hard.

Eberle and Hall as discarded Hall and Oates if anybody has the time...

I get the feeling that Tippett said something like this before the season:

“I came from outside this organization, and let me tell you something. Everyone thinks this team is garbage, run by garbage management, with garbage players. So go out there and prove those ****ers wrong. Show Calgary they were stupid to trade you. Show the refs that you’re better than the other team and that you deserve to draw a penalty. Show the rest of the league that you’re not the slow, disorganized bunch of scrubs that they think you are. Play with pressure, play with pride, play with confidence. Do to them what they’ve done to you the last two years. Let’s get to work.”

Can people please post this quote again so I can like it again and again...

Awesome GDT, Fitter.

Thanks.

This is a match we can't afford to lose, the Devils are pretty bad ATM.

But after yesterday game, I expect them to start strong, I hope the Oilers are ready.

New Jersey is the only team that McDavid hasn't scored a goal against.
First time for everything. Oilers can beat these guys if they have the right attitude and don't go back to their lazy ways when they win a few games in a row.

As for the game, I don't have a good feeling about it. The Devils are sure to be desperate after last nights' spanking and they play with a ton of speed and physicality in that building which I'm afraid will be rough on the young D. I think this will be a tough one for the Oilers.

Disclaimer: the sample size is small. That said...

Our next two games are against teams with a combined average high danger chances for % of 37. That is... horrific. NYR are 2-0 but they gave up 47 shots to Winnepeg and were in all other ways other than the scoreboard dominated, and the other game was vs Ottawa who we all now is going to really struggle this year.

1) Have to take at least 3 pts out of the two games don't you think?

2) I really hope they start Smith tonight.

True. But their goaltending is getting them nowhere fast. I have watched most of their games. They can attack, no doubt, but they seem to not really do a lot? The hallmark of Taylor Hall, imo. Unreal possession player, but not a great finisher, not a great passer, nothing lethal when it gets down to the short strokes.
