A good player would have seen that empty net in front of him and would have shoveled that in.
Just no. There was no empty net, the pass came to his left toe, he did well to control it and get it off quickly. If he were a top 50 player in the NHL, he might have gotten a better release or tried to tuck it far side but absolutely not that a "good" player could do a whole lot better. Maybe an excellent player.

I think his only other option would’ve been to try to go to the middle and chip it far side once Blackwood committed to the sliding splits, but there really wasn’t enough room or time

There was a lot of room 5-hole the way Blackwood sprawled. It could have been redirected on the ice but I don't blame Smith for also wanting to get off a better shot.
