Name a sport where subs never get into games

This is disingenuous. Subs are part of the game day roster in football and basketball. In the NHL only the goalie is a sub on the game day roster. Furthermore, in basketball and football subs come in to give the players a breather but they play every game just rest in game. Jones didn't play at all last night.

it's a bit different when there's injuries or if you are playing almost everyday like in baseball. In hockey if you have a healthy lineup and the 7th defenseman or 13th forward is clearly inferior to the guy he is replacing there's almost no reason to play them.

But they do. On every team.

to be clear hajek is not the reason we lost, but i don’t like that logic anyway. he killed many, many offensive zone possessions and let in lots of easy entries, which definitely contributed to our loss, but i guess he wasn’t the reason. girardi and staal at the tail end of their nhl days benefitted from this logic a lot “yeah they’re awful but they aren’t literally passing to the other team with an open net every shift so you can’t say they’re the reason we lost!”

Igor and Jones probably give them a better chance to win last night but you gotta mix the 7D and 2G (and 13F) into the lineup with some regularity. The goal is not to win 82. The goal is to get into the playoffs healthy and ready to go. Torts’ and AV’s teams killed themselves going for the President’s Trophy but at the end of the day it’s about April-June.

Under the circumstances this game isn’t worrying, we still out up 41 shots and created a lot of chances, we just got goalied which rarely happens to us, and a couple of defensive breakdowns from a tired team. It’s not like we were lifeless. Get some rest and keep it rolling against a weak opponent on Monday

people thinking hajek is a viable NHL option is an excellent case study on how useless the eye test is
who watches Hajek over the past couple seasons and says he's viable? It's the opposite, the eye test goes against him.

So, Goodrow moves to Center 4th line? OR call up Rydahl?

Still have Blais coming back and whenever the Russian baby giraffe heals up

Hajek is the Benjamin Button of hockey players. He had a strong debut as a Ranger... got hurt and has degraded every year.

This is the worst he has ever been. You can't watch him and think he's a good defenseman. 'Getting a sub' in is not normal when there's a major discrepancy in talent/productivity.

The top 6D clearly has Jones and Schneider at the bottom.... then there's a major gulf... then Hajek. Not icing the best team because 'reasons' or 'other teams do it' is dumb. Jones gives us the best chance to win. Put the best lineup out there. Hajek went a loooooooong time without getting action last season. Now, it matters?

Hajek randomly fell down at least three times yesterday. Rooting for him but he’s like the Julian Gauthier of defensemen. Don’t see it happening. They’re going to need to pick up another defenseman at some point.

I don't get people saying we need a sub for skaters because it's a long season. Maybe we should sub Panarin, Mika, and Fox if it's all about rest. Panarin is 30 he sure as hell needs it more than Jones.

Not necessarily rest, but the 13th forward and 7th defensemen need intermittent reps to keep them fresh and up to speed in case there's a serious long term injury that forces them into constant service for a period of time.

I'd rather just call up Robertson/Rydahl if that happened but you never know.

What about Hartford?

Bad scheduling by the NHL. Rangers on a 3rd in 4 nights against a team playing game 1.

1st wasn't great, and you figured so since they have to get going after the night before. Plus the Jets get a boost from it being their home opener.

The 2nd and start to the 3rd were great, got their legs. Dominated play and the Jets lose some of the adrenaline of the beginning of the game.

By the 8 minute mark of the 3rd, they were gassed. Winnipeg played physical and wore them out. It happens. I'm happy with the young guys. I think Schneider even showed well at times.

Halak was fine and kept them in it early. Rest up and take care of business vs two lesser teams from the West.

Due to travel, only saw the first. I know they played better as game went on, but the defensive commitment from the forwards was suspect in the part I watched. Chytil had some very rough shifts where he just seemed lost as to who to cover in his own zone. It could have been exhaustion, so I will give the team a pass, but Chytil can't continue to look like that in his own zone 5 years in. When people get upset with his playing time, it's things like that that will infuriate a coaching staff, and rightfully so. I am a big Chytil fan, but I need to see more from him in his own zone. If he's going to commit to the physical play in other zones, he's gotta find that same level of sacrifice in his own zone or he won't be trusted and his meaningful minutes will suffer.
