I mean, remember all the Cups Eric Johnson brought us?
Or, all those Cups Edmonton ha won in the last 15 years?
Lottery picks are so essential

I prefer winning to having a potentially high draft pick, but YMMV

I prefer the short term setback for the long term success. Teams rarely win without top 5 picks. Sure you can name top 5 picks that didn't work out, but only 1 team wins a cup per year. More teams don't win than do win. And the ones that do almost always have a top 5 pick or more as a core contributor.

Buchnevich has looked better since Monty took over but he's still been uncharacteristically poor with the puck. A lot of his passes that he normally can thread through defenders are getting picked off or are slightly off the mark. I think there is some overthinking on his end but he just needs to keep it simple and try not to force plays that aren't there.

Yet the Blues won with only 1 top five pick in his prime in 2019. How many Cups do Buffalo, Edmonton and Ottawa have in the 2000s with all of their top 5s? Their is no sure path to the Cup through the draft, and the Blues were very unlikely to pick there with their current roster.
So, I prefer winning.

We had 2. Schenn and Pietrangelo. We still have Schenn but he is out if his prime. And he admittedly is a weaker one

Ignoring that, we just don't have the elite talent right now to be a favorite fir the cup. I don't care how we get it, but we need it. And drafting high is the easiest/mist consistent way to get it.

We also weren't a favorite when we won it. Also, going back to the year Kyrou was drafted, I think you could argue that both he and Debrincat(2nd rounders) are top ten in that draft, while Thompson has an argument for top five. Rob Tom is probably top five in his draft.

Yes we were. We had a great off season. We disappointed out the gate, whuch us why we needed to fire the coach. But entering the season, hopes were sky high.

You could make an argument that O'Reilly should have been top five in his class....but he was taken with pick 33.
Draft well

That's always the case. Even with top 5 picks. You bring up EJ, but the next 4 picks all have cups and Toews pivked at 3 has 3. You have to draft well. If we can get a difference maker at 20, great. But it's easier at 3rd OA

No, they weren't. Hopes were WC2-and-get-bounced high.

EJ won a Cup.
