If Jersey blows them out, I suspect Laviolette gets canned.

It won't matter.

Coaches don't matter, with the exception sometimes being short term.

Boston coach has greatest regular season in NHL and gets dumped not too far afterwards.

Coaches don't matter.

Coaches don't matter.
I think Torts can be a game changer with patience above and buy-in below, but he's an exception.

I've pretty much come around on how you feel about coaches. I think it's possible for them to make a difference in a meta that allows for it, but NHL coaches are the most risk-averse people in pro sports.

Torts is the only one left who's gonna say "you play the game I tell you to play or you sit, and I don't care who you are." The rest of them are just going to ride the guys making the money because then it's not their fault when they're looking for their next job.

Same thing with "systems." You're not gonna do anything revolutionary when you're gonna be looking for work next summer.

That's the nature of a job with a 2-3 year life expectancy.

and the 'Tort's method" doesn't really work anyway. 22 years of coaching for 56 playoff wins and 2 trips past the 2nd round.
It takes a village, so that's not all on Torts, but it's not like his method brings about crazy results

One of those was a Cup

Exactly, so only 1 other 3rd round + appearance, and that Cup was 20 years ago.
Again, not all on him, and they are hard to win, but he's not some guru who is getting results others can't; and I am one of the ones who was pretty vocal about him getting at least 1 more year here

You're not wrong. I think he's the last coach left that's a real builder of an identity, but his teams don't win until he's gone, like we did with AV babysitting.

I'm kind of surprised no team has offered him some kind of revamped Director of Hockey Development role where he works alongside a coach but has no say in tactics/strategy, he is responsible for 'team culture' and works closely with players 23 and under to really develop them as 'Torts type ' players

how about not giving a eight year contract with no movement clause to a loser that Ottawa gave up on? my first season by jury is one of the all-time worst in NHL history Ryan Reeves, Brett Howden, Patrick Nemeth trading Buchnevich signing Goudreau signing Mika resigning Lindgren, and I’m probably missing a move or two from that off-season that someone can remind me of that makes it even worse
