I don't think so, the team actually had a solid foundation after the draft.

And like other stuff could happen, like does Chiarelli trade the 16th if he doesn't have McDavid?

Maybe if it's Eichel or Marner or Hanifin going 2nd or 3rd to us, maybe he keeps the 16th and drafts Barzal or Eriksson Ek.

I think one thing is for sure, Leon Draisaitl would likely be the face of the franchise.
Well this is what makes it such a tough alternate universe- if we lose the McDavid lottery then Chiarelli (and probably Holland) never becomes our GM. MacT was kept on as GM after the 2014-2015 season, he was only fired after we won the McDavid lottery. Supposedly that was because McDavid/Jackson had concerns about the Oilers management. If we lose that draft, MacT stays on at least one more year.

As for the draft, Stauffer has said that Chiarelli wasn't taking Barzal either way because they didn't like how small he was. Chiarelli liked Svechnikov and Eriksson Ek, so it would have been one of those two. Tough to say who MacT would have gone with, but I'm guessing the approach would have been similar since Bob Green was a holdover.

But ultimately, I think we underestimate how much McDavid changed the perception of the Oilers around the league. Guys like Hyman and E. Kane are here because of him. If we lose that lottery, I think we're still a B-tier destination at best, needing to overpay players, and putting all of our hopes on 18 year olds. Even if we bring in some better young players, I think we're trying to outrun the ones we're losing to free agency. I just didn't see us heading in a positive direction.

All you need to do is look at Mike Smith's save % his years with the Oilers. He was .902, .923, and .915

And he famously sought "outside help" after a poor first year

Schwartz sucks but Skinner is bad.
Smith was the best starter value in the whole league. Still didn’t stop us from running him outta town or into retirement. What was he paid? 2.25M? and the narrative was always “we can’t go into another season with Smith as our goalie”

I think he was done after that last run vs Colorado (injuries). It's too bad they didn't have a 37 year old Smith last year or vs Vegas. I think they could have gone all the way one of those years.

Smith is probably unironically the best goalie this team has had since Roloson. Hmm....

Did they look like a contender when they were 2-9-1 last year?
Atleast that was Woody’s system we could lay that on last year. This year, it could be the personnel unless half our roster gets their heads out of their ass.

He was. We just didn’t appreciate what we had before he was done and still putting up good numbers for a measly cap hit.
