Tocchet still can't implement proper transitions. It's improved a fair bit since the last year, but then has lapsed during the recent slides. I think it's too little improvement against teams that were already good at defending against it, and Colorado was great against odd-man rushes and the transition game last year, while the Coyotes had their only strength being odd-man rushes. Since almost all of the Coyotes' offense tended to come off the rush, you saw a pretty substantial series win over Nashville who struggled against it, and then a complete shutdown once up against the Avalanche as good defense tends to shut down good offense (see numerous examples of bad teams just tightening up defensively in order to stay in games off a lucky bounce against teams much better than them).
I said it after last year's playoff loss, the team can't transition the puck out of the defensive zone, let alone transition it into the offensive zone for sustained pressure, so they aren't even able to actually test that aspect of Colorado's defense. Some of this can be blamed on a lack of center depth, but after the playoff elimination, you'd think there'd be a new game plan. Alas, frustratingly the team just cannot adapt with Tocchet at the helm.
