Game 18: 11/15/14 Champs 3, That other team from So Cal 2 (OT Final)

Hayward combing through the entire book of excuses tonight.

Funny how fatigue is a factor in tonight's game when it never came up yesterday with the Kings playing 3 in 4 with the last game early in the day. Even more impressive that we were able to gut out this win with all the issues this team has on and off the ice, but you play the hand you're dealt and get over it. The hyperfocus on the reffing is a pathetic excuse coming from team leadership. At least Boudreau tried to shut everyone up and I'm sure he'll refocus them, but my goodness, it's a regular season game, you're not entitled to a win and **** happens, don't be a petulant baby about it, especially since it's not like we're talking puck-off-the-net level calls.

I think it was Stoll that said "if you're not cheating, you're not trying" during the playoffs. Maybe that's what the Ducks should do.

I broke out my 19 yr Scotch when this happened.

It happened right in front of me (section 112, row 8). That place was so ****ing loud for so long I can't describe it. The feeling is surreal, realizing in the wink of an eye your team just won the championship.

What a great experience.

That had to be unreal. You're a hell of a lucky fan!

From @SWhyno, NHL not budging on Kings/Voynov/salary-cap issue. (Try to act surprised.) http://*******/11k4fLb

Not surprised but still sucks.

But some good news..

Alec Martinez is expected to miss one week, per DL: http://lakingsinsider.com/2014/11/17/martinez-out-one-week-per-lombardi/ …

No real shock on the Voynov front but it always re-aggravates me to see that

Glad the Martinez thing seems to be mostly just a flesh/nail wound. Was worried the puck blew up his fingertip/bone or something (yes, that happens and yes, it's as nasty as it sounds).

Wow...dont like those lines much at all

Sutter has the blender out:
12-11-22
74-77-73
70-28-14
13-10-23
71-15

Lewis has been playing well. Maybe he can get another goal with Kopitar/Gaborik. But yeah, not a fan of the lines either.

Meh, lets roll with it and see what happens. The line blender (and special teams) helped us get back on track last game.

I'm pretty excited at the thought of once again only missing Voynov from our blueline. We actually have a fairly light November with some big breaks, its a good a time as any for a funeral march to and from the IR.

I thought that as well, which is why undoing that is curious. I don't see it helping the 3 top lines at all. The 4th line has KC and MR , who have (per JFTC) the best possession numbers on the team, both over 56%, so I sort of get that a little, but putting Pearson, whose struggling a bit with turnovers and SToll, whose struggled alot on the same line? NO that I don't get, all i see is SOG's going the other way. And he might change his mind again, esp if they fall behind.

STability will bring better results than changing the lines every game.

Sutter switched all the lines around again and was asked about it post practice. The article below provides his replies, which make very little sense. And he keeps saying he's switching the lins around to get more from his top players, which I don't see working out when you don't give them a chance to mesh. I get that Lewis is Sutter's favorite player, and I like Lewis, but he's not a 1st line winger and won't improve the odds of Kopi and Gabby scoring. Who has better odds of ripping a quality shot past Luongo, Toffoli, Carter, Williams or Lewis???. The one winger he hasn't tried there, that probably would work , even if for a game or two is Toffoli.
He'll have to move some of the around by the 2nd period when they're down by2 goals.

That’s why – it’s sort of like a double-edged sword – when you’re asking the question about mixing lines, well, it’s because we need more out of our top players.

He's done this a lot, but what he does do is keep things consistent once the playoffs come around.. So I think this is more of an "investment" strategy, to get players used to playing with different line-mates and trying some things out before the lines settle.

Depends on what you are looking for as "results". I used to be really frustrated with line blendering, but remember, Sutter's goal isn't "going 82-0". His goal is "getting into the playoffs, and there doing better than 16-12 with the injuries that happen". So, maybe losing some games in November helps the skaters be ready to skate with anyone... maybe not. But I'm not as quick to be angry with line blendering any more - especially this early in the season.

Maybe I should have read this before posting -- you said what I was trying to much more concisely. Thank you.

Kopitar and muckers sometimes yield surprising results. And I don't mind the talent spread around evenly for a couple games or whatever. Can't hurt to try.

Yeah, this is an ongoing thing -- a process -- with a lot of moving parts. Guys have to get used to playing with other guys. Guys have to learn how to play in different situations. Guys have to be rewarded for this or that, while others may need a kick in the pants for something or other. Young players need to be exposed to more game situations and vets need a break sometimes. Then there are injuries and a bunch of other stuff to contend with. Blenderize!

In any case, Carter with Gaborik and Kopitar is fine on the power play. It wasn't working 5 on 5. So Lewis gets a chance to be the guy who goes into the corner and digs out pucks. Curious to see how he does.

Can we sticky this? :handclap:

Never ceases to amaze me how much people fret about line combos, especially under Sutter. They rarely stay the same period to period, or even shift to shift, much less game to game.

I don't care about the line combo's anymore, Sutter is simply rewarding Lewis for his excellent start, and you know exactly what Lewis will give you every shift.

The same can't be said for about all of the other forwards at the moment.

So it is , what it is.

Exactly.

The 70s have fallen off a cliff save Toffoli, and Gaborik and Kopitar have been invisible for most of the year. Our most consistent forward as been Richards.

Blend it up, maybe find something new, get the top guys going. Sutter knows what he's doing.

Soon as they hit the road, the offense dried up. I think Pearson may have 1 point over the last 10.
