This is year 5 for BA, just saying....tick....tick....tick
What did you expect this year? You can bitch all you want but at the end of the day it's all about winning and making the playoffs. In my opinion, if the team stays in the wild card race AT is safe as coach. If not Smith might get itchy fingers.

By year 5 of a rebuild? I expected a solid playoff team, that is reasonable, we sure aren't there yet. The worst teams in the NHL are 5-7 points out of a wild card spot, so all teams are close to being in:)

I am not impressed with the rebuild or the coaching so far. I am not saying they should be fired, I give them both a mixed review at this time, both just ok under the circumstances. I'm pulling for Bear, BA and the team, I hope they are GM and coach of the year and we make the playoffs, that would be great.

So you're ignoring the fact that the Coyotes traded their 1st in 2020, forfeited a 2nd that year, forfeited a 1st in '21? IMO, the proper rebuild didn't really start until '22 and GMBA made do with what he had prior. Those 2 1sts & a 2nd lost is why it only appears to be the prospects not developing! We missed out on 2 top prospects because of "not to be named"!

So the proper rebuild is really only in year 3 and I consider Guenther to have been in a hockey trade because it cost us 2 NHLers that are still playing.

A stretch? Not really! Losing 1sts as draft capital for nothing is a set back in a rebuild. Don't see how you can consider it GMBA's fault. He didn't receive an AZ 1st from the resulting prior season until '22. Those prior 2 years should never be considered as part of the "rebuild" but as an abomination of the prior GM's careless actions!

Detroit, Ottawa, Buffalo and probably Columbus all started their rebuild ahead of Utah and we are right there with them at the moment. The Habs and Utah started the same time and we are ahead of them. Not saying we should be doing cartwheels, but maybe we are where we should be. Let's wait and see how the year unfolds.

Not the same:
Habs-NHL stanley cup finals in 2021, did the rebuild start before that then?
Wings-91 points last year, so way ahead of Utah
Columbus-3 GMs since BA started
Buffalo-long term disaster

Nothing above makes BA look good. Like you, we need to let this year play out.

Many teams have traded away future first round picks to try and compete now, then the team starts losing and the rebuild starts, the new GM is in a tougher spot. That is exactly what happened here, Chayka mistakes in a different manner.
But, what about BA waiting a year to start the rebuild, waiting longer to trade OEL and it took him 18 months to trade Chych. BA is on the hook for those decisions which also strung out the rebuild.

If we pretend his first 2 years don't count, sure then we are on track:)

OEL gave a time limit where he would waive his NMC, which was 6 days from when GMBA took over. Chychrun got hurt which stalled the eventual trade.
And to lose 2 1sts in consecutive years isn't normal, it's an abomination.
Anyways, I still believe this team will make the playoffs this season as long Durzi and Marino can shake off their injuries. And still hoping to acquire Provorov around the time we get Marino back.
But I expect the team to be better next season and this is my basis for discussing the rebuild time line. After next season, Utah will have a very favorable opinion around the league as being a top franchise to play for. A must have if you want the franchise to be a "contender"!

All things considered I still can't believe BA didn't get robbed. Since it was being reported that OEL would only waive for BOS or VAN he had only 2 teams to deal with and they both knew the competition was thin. Heck, BOS might not have really wanted OEL that much for all we know, leaving only VAN to work out a trade with. Add in OEL's contract was considered bad at the time too.

Patience is probably what showed VAN we weren't going to just give OEL away and be done with it. Fantastic trade by BA.
