Sweeney’s clear plan has been to re-tool and create a new core on the fly. Very very difficult to do. This is what they’ve landed with, so far:

Inner core: Pasta, McAvoy, H Lindholm, E Lindholm, Swayman

Outer core: Coyle, Zacha, Carlo, Zadorov

Guys they hope will become core: Poitras, Lohrei, Lysell (??)

Veteran: Marchand

Can argue whether the Lindholms are inner or outer, but otherwise I think this is more or less right.

So, with things where they are now, three difficult questions – is this core actually good enough to build a Cup-contending team around? If it is not, can one or two changes move the needle enough to make it so, and if so, what and who? If the answer to both is no, does that mean you have to properly blow it up and, in a sense, start again? Subsidiary to that, what does that look like? What are the risks? How long might it take?

The first step though, before you answer even the first question, and which is becoming almost certain now, is you have to bring in a new coach and see if that can be the difference maker in itself. Unlikely perhaps, but you probably have to try. Beyond that, it’s going to be tough. Ownership have resisted a full rebuild and its associated costs and perils with all their might. But if they are dragged kicking and screaming to it, what will they do? It’s happened before, and last time the Bruins won a Cup out of it. But it’s harder than ever to come up from the bottom and build a serious contender in the modern NHL.

What we’ll probably get is a sequence. Try a new coach, try a big trade/signing or two, and go the more nuclear option only as a last resort. That sort of cautious approach may well work, or it may simply drag out the misery and delay the inevitable. A rough road ahead.

First up, though, thanks and bye Monty. May well be that he wasn’t a major part of the problem, but only one way to find out. Sucks for him, but that’s the life of a coach. Is it right? No idea. Is it happening? You really have to think so. And then management can only pray that the new guy can work some magic, and stave off all the rest of the above.

Shaking my head

Monty- the king of the mix master , says players need to be more " predictable"

Sounds like someone who doesn't have an answer

I don't think anyone has an answer really. Team seems caught in a perpetual state of shell shock. Yelling, tough practices, benchings, player only meetings, drastic line mash ups aren't working right now.

Defensively that may of been the worst Bruins game since the final month of the Dave Lewis era.

Forget the fact that they can't generate squat 5 on 5. How did a Top 5 defensive team go all the way to the bottom 5?

Like we know that they aren't built for high scoring games. But for the defensive coverage to be as bad as it's been thus far, to be giving up high danger chance after high danger chance, there is zero excuse.

We know they have the personnel to be able to defend. It's on the coaching.
I am not so sure. Z was and is a bottom pairing d on bad teams. Peake is the same. I have never been a fan of Carlo. That said the coaching is somewhere between terrible and non-existent.

So we went from a team with one good line to no good lines. Well done.

I kind of figured this might happen simply because we are slow and they are fast. That over simplifies but it's at the core of the issues. My money is on Monty being fired tomorrow.

Now maybe the man who should be fired is Sweeney, but it's likely the coach goes first. Sweeney built this team though. He did what he did with the goalies, he spent in free agency, he's botched the drafts on multiple occasions and he's the one who traded the future away for the present but didn't win the cup anyway.

We pay the price now. It's kind of been inevitable that this fall would come at some point but we aren't really positioned well for any sort of quick change. Perhaps the fastest/best plan is to admit things are over, tear down a good chunk of it and bring in tons of youth and speed and see where that goes. Might want a new GM with that sort of pedigree and mandate. I

It might take a few years. but watching this team just isn't any fun at all. It's boring and dull. It's painful and most definitely not entertaining.

So fire Monty now. See if that works, if not, fire Sweeney and tear it down.

Doubt we see Monty fired tomorrow. My bet is this weekend. They split the games or win both it will give him more rope. If they lose both he’ll be gone Monday

The backend should be very good . Obviously, it isn’t . Ironically, I think Lindholm has been relatively good so far , a lot better than last year. The mainstays like McAvoy and Carlo have been terrible. It’s a collective back end issue but those two have really been hurting the team this year.

Well when your goalies allow 8 goals and they're still your best player......you have a serious problem.

I don't think changing coaches will make a significant difference. To me this is a personnel problem. Sweeney didn't do much to replace the production that left via FA. He expected guys who had career years to make that their new norm.....and they haven't. He wanted to get bigger and tougher to play against so he grabbed other teams failed big man projects with hopes that they'd magically figure it out in Boston.....they haven't.

We're 11 games into the season and the "4th line" is still 3 of your top 5 point producers. Again this is a personnel problem.

Ah f*** it . Usually the Bruins cruise through the regular season and then the wheels fall off in the playoffs. We are in deep shit now but I love it . EVERY game is going to be like a playoff game as we try and claw our way into the playoffs. I’m up for the drama .

They'll get it together eventually, hopefully it won't be too late, but think Monty has to own this game. You can't change every line like that to send a message against a very good team, and be shocked this is the outcome. And if he said players have to be predictable to each other out there post game, well what he wants and how he's coaching are not lining up. How can you expect chemistry when he changes lines so much. He may actually be losing it.

Bruins are in shambles. Big trade.
Would you???

Charlie McAvoy (9.5) and Coyle (5.25) for Elias Pettersson (11.5) and Tyler Myers (3.0)

That 14.75 out and 14.5 in.

Too early?
I would seriously consider this.
Ask Nucks fans about Petterson. He drives them insane. They would take that deal and run.

Has anyone seen the movie Tenet? Christopher Nolan is a fantastic filmmaker but like every director he has flaws. Tenent is the movie where all the flaws come together at once and make for a horrible film with very few redeeming features.

This roster, and this current situation, is Don Sweeney's Tenet. YMMV on just how capable he is. At the very least though he's been decent and stood the test of time. But right now many of his past errors and shortcomings as GM are coming home to roost at the same time. Can the Harvard man squirm his way out of it?
