Just rewatches some of those Kakko setups and the dude is in constant disbelief. He just looks up in the ceiling every time his teammates don't capitalize on these golden opportunities he sets up. He's probably asking himself, what else do I have to do?

The league was also in a much different environment back then. Slower, lower scoring, still a lot of plugs filling up the bottom of lineups. Less of an emphasis on East-west offense. Harder to play that collapsing defensive style when defenseman are much more active than they used to be.
