To be a good NHL goalie you need to play at a sufficiently high level in most games. Being really on it one night and really off it another night is less valuable than being decent both nights.

Montembeault doesn't have to be an all star every night, but he needs to have less nights where the game gets away from him completely.

That's a big step. Lots of NHL goalies who can never take that next step, but have good stretches. Only a few can be reasonably consistent.
