The 17-1 loss vs Sweden really was an anomaly. Yes, it was before Canada sent actual best of teams which started in 1982, but even in the 17-1 loss to Sweden tournament, Canada won silver while Sweden failed to medal. It was a round robin format then.

For sure this is the biggest loss since Canada has sent best of teams.

It hasn't helped that Canada has hit a lull in producing Top End talent in the last 6 or so years.

On the positive side...

In the late 90's and early 2000's Canada went 7(?) years without Gold and we bounced back with 5 straight so...

I think the days of a team winning 5 straight WJCs are over.

Russia appeared to be enjoying the beatdown a little bit more than warranted. Not surprised it rubbed the Canadian players the wrong way. They are under 20 yrs old though. What should we expect especially these days?

For Canada, forget the loss and move on. Hunter needs to activate Byram more and play him with another partner. He's the only dman they have that's willing to be aggressive offensively 5 on 5.

I won't lie.. my last concern is how Canada recovers from this. I already know they will. They can still win the group and the Gold. This means very little in the grand scheme of things. Canada has Germany and the Czechs left - I'm terrified for both of us.lol

I’m sure the Russians were surprised as anyone to be up 6-0.

If the Canadians are upset about it, hopefully it inspires them to play better.

I don’t believe that Canada is somehow consummate professionals when they score against big rivals. Laf was rubbing the logo pretty hard after he scored the big game winning goal.

Imagine if that had been a Russian? We’d be sitting around here talking about celebrating too hard.

Give me a break.

If you don’t like them celebrating so much, then play better.

They earned every one of those goals against a big rival and I have no issue with them getting excited about it.

Taking shots after every whistle clearly worked for them, and it’s the kind of thing Canadian teams have done frequently over the years.

You’re just upset that our team got schooled. It happens.

This poster has to be Russian.

And my guess would be if Canada scored 6 and celebrated the 6th goal like it was an overtime winner, you'd have something to say about it. Better team won today but Russia has always been classless and enough evidence shows that. f*** em.

Minus you being terrified, I agree with everything you wrote. :)

If Canada bounces back, this game will be the turning point that brought them together.

Yes! Especially considering it was offside TWICE. Nothing went right for us, today. A cluster<bleep> from top to bottom.

I agree. I don't think the chest pumping is necessary - from anyone.

What do they always say : "Act like you've done it before".

Get some fresh air and let it go. Lots of hockey left to be played.

In terms of goal differential?

But this can't be the worst performance by Canada ever. In 1998 they got beat down by Kazakhstan and finished near the bottom of the standings.

I feel like Canada has just become progressively more soft over the years and it’s shown in their performances. They used to bring a physical presence to this tournament that would intimidate other teams and you’d watch them shrink against our aggressive, physical style of play.

You gotta hate who you’re playing against, need that kill or be killed mentality every time you step on the ice and are in a puck battle or a foot race.

Generally the people and the teams that have that mentality are the most successful.
That's what happens when hockey community creates an environment where guys like Tom Wilson and Brad Marchand are getting bullied by fans, media, everyone. In order to have the mentality you mentioned you have to like such players and promote them rather than create this p***y narratives like 'Oh these guys have no respect for their opponents, they hit too hard/do dirty stuff'. Bring good old ''keep your head up if you don't want to get killed" mindset back. These soft culture already "pays off".

Meh, I’m inclined to let it go when it’s a bunch of kids.

It’s not like they were celebrating in front of the Canadian bench or anything.

Hunter: “They were stronger and bigger than us. We have to play bigger than that. Throw the game out and learn about it. You can get beat pretty bad if you’re not ready to go.”

“Give the other team credit. They played well, they played hard, they shot the puck well.”

“We didn’t challenge because they didn’t show the video here” (the same angle)

No comment on Lafreniere’s health status right now.
Classic quotes from a dinosaur coach who has been completely left behind as hockey has changed. “We have to play bigger than that” is not the answer. “We need to hold onto the puck in the offensive zone, get tonnes of east-west movement, and not settle for low quality shots” IS the answer for a super skilled team like Canada. Hunter is coaching team Canada just like he coached the Caps - terribly, making a horrible waste of all his skilled players by getting them to play an unskilled grinder style.

It factored into the big Canadian re-think about our hockey coupled with what happened in Nagano.

Russians should celebrate all they want, It was a huge game for them after losing their 1st one against what most thought was one of the top teams in the tournament. They dominated. Good for them

Hahaha im okay, I don't beleive in the hunters at all. How do you not challenge a double offside on the first goal? Questionable player choices prior to the tournament per usual, I'm just watching my favorite teams prospects and I'm happy with how zhuravlyov looked today.
