Man we just dominated in the face off dot tonight… that had so much of an impact on play driving to have us start out with the puck way more often than not….

lots of good things to take away…. As well as plenty of stuff to put up on the video review to go over with the team and show where we can improve things….…. Better to see that than to be a total blowout where we get too overconfident….

I know just 1 game but slow Aho start is cliche at this point.

Even Necas scored tonight.

I remember him having scoring droughts his first two years, but also almost breaking a record for scoring the most games in a row to start the season another, so went back to look at all of his 1st month of the season for each season as I didn't remember how he did each one and was curious. It looks like 1/2 of his seasons (red below) he started slow from a points standpoint.

From a goal scoring though, you are right as he's struggled the first month of most seasons.

21-22: 5G, 10P in 8 games
20-21: 1G, 6P in 6 games (covid shortened season started in January)
19-20: 3G, 6P in 12 games
18-19: 4G, 17P in 12 games
17-18: 0G, 5P in 10 games
16-17: 0G, 5P in 8 games

Oh no, Shane just called Hanna “Abby“ in the postgame. That’s…unfortunate.

Collectively they all called her Abby, like, half a dozen times tonight.

Burns looks like he's gonna be choreographing highly elaborate Storm Surges before long.

I was half expecting him to have something planned for tonight. He is the perfect Storm Surge guy.

He’s going to release one of his big cats onto the ice while the whole team scrambles not to be the slowest one who gets mauled.

If you are that guy, you also get bag skated the next day in practice.

Not much to complain about when you win by 3.

Freddie is an incredible stabilizing presence when he’s healthy. He has no pulse, just casually negates scoring chances.

Burns’ “disruption” ability comes as advertised. He gets a stick on a lot of pucks that other guys wouldn’t quite reach. Also he has an Ovechkin-ish lurking presence on the PP, standing all by himself on the far side of the play and it’s super obvious they’re trying to get the puck around to him.

Loved seeing Slavin plant Gaudreau. He doesn’t need to be a tough guy but a little bit of physical presence wouldn’t hurt his game at all.

Good start to the season. Happy to see Necas have a great game.

I know it's only 1 game, but I noticed a few things that, on the surface, looked different with Necas vs. last year.

First, last year it seemingly was all speed, all the time. There were a number of times this game where I expected him to just continue to skate where he pulled up and slowed the game down a bit allowing him to see the ice and make a nice pass to a teammate vs. just skating it in deep and losing it. He still used his speed to his advantage when the time called for it.

Second, kind of related to the first, he made the simple play way more often when there wasn't anything available vs. trying to do too much and force things. That was noticeable to me.

Lastly, he was much more of a hound defensively than he was on a regular basis last year. Rod had to love that from him.

If that's the type of play we can get from Necas throughout the season, he's going to have a very good year.

I didn't catch laine getting injured at all. I guess I should have been paying closer attention. Sucks for them

I saw it live and commented on it in the GDT. After he and Pesce went into the boards, you could tell that he was holding his arm down with some discomfort and after trying to stay in the play, slowly made his way to the bench. I didn't think the contact was much of anything at the time and the replay kind of showed that. Must have just been the angle at which he was hit.

Looked like something maybe with his elbow?

Hyperextended the elbow when Pesce hit him into the boards. The tweet I posted above has the replay from a few angles.

Guessing it’s a hyperextended elbow, with the big question being the extent of ligament damage. Best case scenario it’s just sore and needs a few days and pills to settle down. Worst case scenario it could be something surgery-worthy.

For a lot of players it wouldn’t be that big of a deal, but Laine having surgery on his elbow could be one of those season-ruining things like Semin and his broken wrist.
