I think everyone is giving the average fan too much credit on this Haula situation. We on HFBoards might think we know a few nuances of why Haula was traded, but 95% of the people booing him have no idea. People were tailgating for hours before the game. Someone mentioned they sold out of beer in the first period in some instances. The fans were drunk and saw a recent Hurricane going at his former teammates after the whistle. They booed. Then they did the WaVe.

Yep. In addition, fans LOVE RBA and Haula was at odds with the player, coach and team hero that fans love. So of course people are going to boo him.

I have no problem with him trying to get under players skin, that's part of the game and like you said, I'm fine with him being a villain.

What are people referring to with this Haula /RBA drama? honest question.

I just don't even have it within me to hate this guy--could care less about him honestly. And it's not even that i'm judging fans for booing him etc (I mean, hello, that's what fans do lol), I just don't get it and feel like I missed something.

eta: I'm still catching up and now realize this issue has been beaten to death. it is what is. I have no feelings towards Haula myself, but boo away.

Also: Haula doesn't have to be Hitler for us to boo the shit out of him. He just has to be a guy we don't like. He's done enough for me to not like him. If that hurts his feelings, tough shit.

"But we're acting just like fans that hate our guys!" Yup. That's how fandom works. I don't give a shit if other fans think that Haula should win the f***ing Lady Byng. I don't like him, I never really liked him, and now I like him less. And that's it.

My Aunt who used to do a lot of hiring work always harps on this: Younger people especially don't seem to realize that even if weed is legal in some places/settings, YOU CAN STILL BE DRUG TESTED.

Happens a lot more than you'd think lol.

Yup, I dont want to sound like an ass but an employer can put restrictions in place whether or not they are illegal. Its legal to be 21 years old and get drunk but almost all businesses would fire you if you came into work drunk. Also may places have tobacco free policies and you can get fired or reprimanded for using tobacco products. This is not new I just dont understand why people think they can do anything they want just because its legal.

I saw the db meter saying we got to 125 last night. How much was piped in?

the old Detroit PbP guys swore we piped in crowd noise in 02. They were giggling about it one of the games this year. I watched their broadcast to hear another broadcast team.

Think I mentioned it in the Game 55 and 56 GDTs, and others did as well.

But again I'd ask - what caused the boos yesterday? Why would they randomly start midway through the first?

I think we're mostly violently agreeing at this point, but...

I thought the boos started up because he got into it with Necas and things went from there.

Pretty sure after he scored he mocked the surge, from there on out he was booed.

BTW Ima just start saying "I'm Tracy Morganed" instead of pretty sure. Its a running gag in my house anytime someone it we do a TM impression

Yes this kind of mob mentality stuff is natural fan behavior, but that doesn't make it good behavior. It's just the same dumb shit we've seen with guys like Pitkanen, Semin, Hamilton, Trocheck returning to their former cities. It's one thing to boo a player because he's wearing the other laundry. It's another thing to cultivate conflict with him on a personal level. Especially when that is being fueled not by his actual behavior, but by media rumors on dressing room dynamics. Then riding the guy to the point that he reacts in the mildest way, and turning it into LoOk He'S dOiNg It AgAiN so the next round is even more intense and personal.

Haula went through some stuff in Raleigh that none of us would ever want to deal with. From the circumstances of his coming here, to the physical issues he dealt with, to losing a baby, to being frozen out by the coach, to getting traded off as a spare part. The guy more than paid his dues and didn't say a word about it publicly. Boo him for being a Pred, sure. But this narrative around him being an awful person, "self absorbed prick", all that stuff... man, that's just a bad look for a fanbase that has built a culture around not being toxic to that level.

Save it for someone who actually earned it. We should be seeing a few of those before this playoff is over.

You can be a scold all you want. It's not going to change my mind, nor the mind of many others, and there's no reason it should. Yes, he had a very tough time in his time in Carolina. Yes, I'm sure he's a decent fellow with many positive qualities off the ice, and I'll happily stipulate to them.

He's a villain in large part because he's chosen to take the role of the villain, both in his style of play and his decision to play to the crowd. It is the job of the villain to be booed. That's it, and that's all. You're making too much of it.

It's not like the Canes players are lining up to buy this guy bouquets, either. When they shake his hand at the end of the series, then it's done. Until then, boooooooo and f*** that guy.

I thought I remembered him getting booed literally the first time he touched the puck early in the 1st period...

it wasnt anything until he seemed to take a run at Necas then jawing all the way to the bench. Then made it worse with his constant jawing with our players.

he was doing similar stuff during the regular season too. Boo him.

Like I said (several times now) this isn't about booing him. I booed him last night, plan to boo him tomorrow. That's part of being a fan.

What rubs me the wrong way is drumming up narratives where he's a bad human being on a personal level. Sure, I'll push back against that. Call me a scold or whatever, but I'll do the same thing here that I've done in the past to Bruins/Flyers/Flames/Panthers fans when they came after our players with toxic narratives. If I'm alone in taking that stand, fine.

Yes, directly as a result of observing him being a dick to Necas...ya know, his actual behavior.

Again, this is not what I'm talking about. "Self absorbed prick" has nothing to do with him getting in a mild shoving bout with Necas.

A stand against what, though?

If "self centered prick" is the roughest it gets, then what are we all tangled up about? I myself am, from time to time, a self centered prick, as Mrs. Hank occasionally reminds me. Comes with being a Leo.

There's legitimate reason to suspect that Haula is not well liked by many of the current Hurricanes players. If you think that's pushing some kind of toxic narrative, fine. No one's accusing him of being a bad husband or father. We just don't like the guy on the ice.

I have a source of a source that says he's a bad friend. The flaky type who agrees to a weekend cookout but then pulls a no show after volunteering to bring the buns.
